Mine was that he's originally from France but his early education (including his learning to speak English) took place in England. Anyway, we saw and heard his mom in a flashback/hallucination and she had a French accent.

This was pretty much my headcanon too.

Seems plausible. It's really only a matter of time.

This secret genuinely made me laugh because my husband and I were talking about "what if" medieval-early modern England had kept various French territories a couple of hours ago! And we both love Star Trek too. So I'm sorry I'm not really adding anything other than I liked this secret.

Were you watching a documentary on the Plantagenets by any chance?

Haha yes! My husband isn't really into medieval stuff, he's more a twentieth century world history guy. But he indulges me and my silly counter factual musings from time to time :)

We watched the same one! It's slightly earlier than the majority of our knowledge and we thought it was pretty interesting. I love a good what if story too :)

I just figure a world that has a global government and explores other worlds has much more moving around and cultures and languages and even accents spread everywhere.

Hmm. My thought would be that the Trek-verse never had a Brexit (Eugenics Wars, etc) and British people and French people increasingly travelled back and forth between France and the UK, so people got exposed to more accents over time and Jean-Luc must've had a very memorable British teacher/professor/mentor.

People from France have never emigrated anywhere ever in any point in history.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure where you meant to go with this when Picard is canonically a French person from France.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
They clearly meant that, since "People from France have never emigrated anywhere ever in any point in history", Picard never left France at all and every single episode of TNG was a figment of his imagination.

Zut alors!

(Anonymous) 2018-04-26 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Most French people who learn English learn some form of UK English - that's not Patrick Stewart's natural accent either! Alternatively, he is speaking French (we do get the occasional "merde"!) and the universal translator is doing its thing.

But presumably, the same is true for many other characters on the show. So that just begs the question why the universal translator chooses to use that specific British accent for Picard but not for other humans or aliens.

His family have French accents.

My head canon is that, given we know that Picard rebelled against family tradition by running off to Starfleet instead of growing wine, began his rebellion by performatively becoming a massive teenage Anglophile, and eventually it stuck. It's not just the accent - he loves Shakespeare, but we never hear him refer to Moliere or Voltaire; he is a passionate tea drinker. All the cultural signals we get around him, other than his name and the odd glimpse of his family, are British.
