I always comforted myself about those stories by telling myself I didn't need to worry about people like them because they were probably dead already, so this definitely freaked me out! :|

Eh, statistically you are far more likely to be murdered by someone you know than a random serial killer.

This is true. More specifically, a man you know: boyfriend/husband, family member, friend, or co-worker.

On the one hand, just because specific serial killers get old and die, that doesn't mean that evil people stop being born.

On the other hand, the number of active serial killers has apparently dropped significantly since the 80s (from around 200 to around 50 according to some estimates) so you're probably OK

I LOVE the theory that the number of serial killers (and overall violence) dropped along with the change from leaded to unleaded gasoline. So fascinating.

Yeah. I think that's probably only one reason among several but it's so interesting how things like that can have these deep, radical, far reaching effects.

But it also depresses me, because it underscores how much those seemingly small things matter. how many other little tiny harmful things are there out there that we let go on out of inertia or lack of political will and how much worse are they making the world?

I like the Tumblr post that posits that the number of serial killers decreased because people don't open the door for strangers/hitchhike/help randos on the street anymore like they did in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.
