Rant

So, the gynecologist I have been seeing became out of network. One thing that made me angry. I found someone new in the practice. He was a guy, but I liked him. My mother called the office today because my next appointment had to be rescheduled and found out it was a guy. And decided I wouldn't want to see a guy even though I've already seen him. So now I'm seeing a third person. Argh.

Nope. Just living with parents and sharing a car.

That sucks. How's the "saving up money to move away from your crazy parents" thing going?

Working on it. Have several job interviews in the next few weeks. Doing regular part-time work for an attorney who hopes to have a permanent position for me in the near future. Going to all the networking events I can. Working on my Spanish. Doing volunteer work.

Is there a reason why you can't disabuse your mother of that mistaken notion, schedule your own appointments and see the gynecologist you like?

Tried it. She won't pay for the copay or any testing if I see a man. And I could pay a few copays myself, but if he wanted to do testing, I couldn't pay. And we talked about possibly switching to an IUD, which for me would require surgery. No way I can afford that.

I hope you can gain financial independence from your parents and maybe consider never speaking to them again after you do. It's awful, trying to exercise this amount of unnecessary control over your ADULT child's life just because you hold the purse strings.

FFS, it’s a doctor. They’re not gonna sexually assault you just because they’re male. I mean, they could, but it’s not common, and certainly not an inevitability. And it’s actually illegal for your parents, or anyone you don’t authorize who isn’t your doctor, to get info about your medical conditions and treatment.

I would mention to your new gynecologist that your parents are using your financial dependence on them to dictate even the gender of your doctors, and ask that they note that you have not given your parents permission to have access to your medical info.

Good luck, and I hope you get away from your crazy controlling parents ASAP.
