"Look at what the X-Men have become?"

Alright, 183, I'm not entirely certain what you mean by this in reference to that particular title and that particular variant cover (because, honestly, X-Force is as gritty and dirty and ugly as you can get without resorting to Max: unless you're bothered by the slaughter? I dunno. The rainbows and puppy dogs variant, I thought, was a hilarious and ironic twist for the book... especially when the alternative is referred to as a "bloody variant".)

Anyway. To the point, and my apologies if I sound like an ass (but no apologies offered for my opinion on the matter) if you haven't made an effort to suss out the nuances of the characters by actually reading the books, watching the movies, renting the DVDs, whatever, you're not experiencing anything firsthand, and its likely that one day, someone will pick you off and call you out for it, because someday, you will slip and the canon nazis riot in that sort of gore, especially when you find yourself in a high profile position (in my opinion, undeservedly).

The rest of us are doing the work and doing the research because we like it. Why can't you give your dollars to a suffering industry and read the books? Or was the point of this secret a confession that you're exploiting something you know virtually nothing about to gain notoriety in a fandom you don't really care about?

Whatever, man.

*kicks soapbox out of the way*

I do care about the fandom. I'm in the fandom, just not for this particular cast of characters. I read other Marvel titles, and I support the 'suffering' industry, I collect other series, and Marvel is probably far from 'suffering'.

I'd contest that. The whole of the comics industry is on a steady decline, much like the music industry, though for a different reason.

Regardless, my opinion still stands: I think you're copping out, taking the easy way around, and depreciating canonical source material.

Good for you if you derive some sort of pleasure from it, but inform yourself before making uninformed statements on the content of something by glancing at the cover.

This is sort of random, but I have few X-Men friends so I'm asking you, random X-Men fan from f!s: What comics would you recommend? I want to read some of other people's favorites.

Superhero comics? Or just general fangirl love? Heh.

Uhm, okay: of the X-titles, definitely Astonishing now that Warren Ellis is at the bat, Legacy (despite Carey's mistreatment of Gambit, though that seems to be the trend these days), Uncanny (no question there), Young X-Men I'd recommend only if you're not expecting a revision of New X-Men (see if you can Divided We Stand for that. That was alternately great and terrible.)

Non X-titles: Runaways, The Dark Tower (start with the actual books if you're unfamiliar with the universe.), Locke & Key by Joe Hill (wait for the trade. This was mag-nif-ique. For srs.), anything by Ben Templesmith. (That bears repeating.) ANYTHING by Ben Templesmith (Wormwood, Fell, Singularity 7... and Welcome to Hoxford looks promising as well.) Anything from Mignolaverse (Hellboy & B.P.R.D. "The Crooked Man" just kicked off, and it's already renewed my fangirl vigor.) Teen Titans: Year One was wonderful too, though that just wrapped, and Titans looks promising. (Gar's fabulous, as of right now. I hope that lasts a little while longer, I need crack in my diet.) Buffy (for sure, now that Fray's in the mix) and Angel (because Buffy &
Angel go together like PB&J.)

I've also heard good things about X-Men: First Class, but haven't quite ventured that far. (Henry without the blue fur just feels strange, you know?)

Woot! I was looking specifically for X-Men recs, but thanks for the other stuff too - I'll check some of those out (the only thing I'm into out of what you listed already is Hellboy). You are awesome awesome awesome!
