108: Judging from the state of the fandom, you're not alone.

127: I think most people would just go "wtf, are you blind?" rather than yell. Also, hating a whole medium because many of the styles have a few similar attributes seems a little... dismissive?

157: I wanted to like ten more, because nine wasn't coming back, and I would be much happier preferring the current Doctor. I failed, unfortunately, and miss nine like crazy. I love ten as well, just not as much (and the romance subplot with Rose was annoying).

173: I think people draw the parallel because both Light and Hitler thought that they had the right to kill the people they felt deserved it, and that they were making a better world by doing so.

181: Good grief, that book sure is everywhere. And it's not even good! Even Anne Rice and Laurell Hamilton write better!

Well... Hitler only blamed the Jews because he hated them... Light truly thought he was going to make the world a better place by killing off criminals.

He hated them because the thought they were to blame for Germany's problems, along with all the other groups of people he despised. He honestly thought they were as bad as thieves and murderers, and that the world would be a better place without them.

Really, his ambition was to create a utopian kingdom, but like Light his reasoning was flawed (to put it mildly).

If that was the case, explain rumors about why he hated them in the first which had nothing to do with Germany's ruined economy which you could so blame on the countries who participated in WWI and the Treaty of Versailles.

Well, it's a long and complicated story, beginning with self-loathing and twisted political influences in his youth combined with the way Germany was treated after the great war (that's the first world war). Many jews in Germany had high positions and made a great target for someone to blame the state of the country on. The reason he was elected in the first place was because people believed he was going to save the country.

Didn't you learn this in school? It's common knowledge. Well, over here it is anyway.

I missed Hitler psychoanalysis day in class for a family trip. T.T

God...I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge in American? At least all my classmates and I knew it by 9th grade. DDD: Our education system can't have failed others that badly? I mean REALLY.

I've heard that eduction can vary a lot between schools in the U.S. but I'm not going to assume the worst here. Mayhbe she just wasn't paying attention?

Do you honestly think that somebody would expend the kind of resources on a Holocaust DURING A WAR OF ATTRITION if they were doing it out of pure malice? I say this as somebody who can cross off entire branches of my family tree due to that atrocity: Hitler thought that he was purging the world of a great evil. You have to understand, Hitler thought that the Jews were actively and maliciously sabotaging Germany (he even blamed Jews for the Treaty of Versailles, as well as communism). It wasn't rational, it wasn't sane, but it was something he genuinely believed. It doesn't mean that he wasn't evil, just that he was an evil man who THOUGHT he was good.

Re: 108, 127, 157, 173, 181

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
O.o I never said he wasn't evil.

His blaming them stemmed from his hate. Shit, you don't need to get your panties in a bunch, my great-grandmother had to leave Russia because most of her family was raped and/or slaughtered during the pogroms, can I be special now, too? I also had the "joy" of seeing the shit the Jews went through at the Museum of Tolerance and my own interest in the subject when I was thirteen. Just so you know, it sometimes haunts me.

I agree with the secret poster that comparing Light to Hitler just trivializes who Hitler was and what he did.

Re: 108, 127, 157, 173, 181

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
How can you so spectacularly miss the point? I brought up my own family history not to show that I'm 'special', but to offset the assumption I've seen in many of your replies that people who disagree with you are somehow insensitive to the true horror of what Hitler did.

Secondly, I kept emphasizing how EVIL I think Hitler is, not because I thought you didn't think so, but because I wanted to show that just because I understand the reasons behind his action doesn't mean that I think he's any less, well, evil.

Thirdly, you have failed to show that the comparison is invalid (in all forms, including Light's personality, motivations, and methodology). You have merely stated that you think the comparison is a 'trivialization' of what Hitler did. That is not what the secret was arguing.

tl;dr FAIL

Re: 108, 127, 157, 173, 181

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can't compare how a teenage boy who just so happened to come across something that changed his fate who was by no means evil when he found his tool comparable to a man who actually worked to gain what he wanted and who was already out for the Jews when he started his shit. I don't care about intentions or other similarities, not only did they start out different (who knows what made Hitler hate the Jews in the first place, whatever it was, he was butthurt by it, and no, I mean before he started on his ideals and God awful book, it can't have just been the Treaty of Versailles that made him target the Jews), but you can't even compare the millions of innocents who died and suffered to maybe a few thousand criminals who all died quickly and painlessly (and maybe a few thousand, if that, because Mikami was a diligent little bastard).

Besides, Light is fictional! In the end, no one died and Death Notes are not real! That's my main problem, Light is fictional and can do no harm to anyone! And back to your first statement? If you hate someone enough and you have the power to harm them and get away with it? Guess what's gonna happen?

Hey now, I got a fairly good grasp of characterization from those cutscenes, unless the gameplay has a major role in character development. And I do have a pretty good grasp of basic storytelling and grammar. :P

According to a fandom who mostly seem to haven't played the game either, that is... Sorry, just poking you a little, heh. It's not like I know what you've written!
