Because people tend to separate reality from fantasy, and fantastical things seem automatically less frightening because they're not real. People can watch and enjoy horror movies, but they woudln't want to live through one.
By comparing Hitler to a fantasy character - associating him with one, if you will, people might also associate him with the perceived "good things" about Light, or think subconsciously that "like Light" he has good sides.
I find trends of thought like this discturbing, especially in a reality where Holocaust denial exists.

Um... not to start a great deal of wank, but because Hitler was a human being, albeit a fucked up genocidal human being who at some point in his life went utterly batshit psychotic, I do have to point out that Hitler probably DID have some good sides in his life. XD; Sorry, I'm just. Tired of people who try to paint Hitler as a total black-and-white monster who had no soul and was never comparable to a human being, even an epically fucked up one, ever.

I do agree that it makes Hitler seem less horrible, if only because Hitler was 1)real holy shit, and also 2)killed SO MANY PEOPLE and 3)very slowly and torturously. Just afhsaukfah uck.

I am perfectly and entirely aware that Hitler had good sides, and was not a sinkhole of utter, true, and unadulterated evil. But my point is, when regarding what he did, I honestly see no real purpose in "humanizing" him overmuch (in the way that a comparison with Light might lead people to do).
I emphasized that in this comment specifically because they were talking about comparing him to Light, and in general, there is a tendency to like anime/manga characters - especially if they're good looking. People who claim to sympathize/like Light are very quick to point out the "right" or "good sides" of what he's doing, and that's why I think that a comparison like that might lead people to erroneously associate the two of them, and by association, see Hitler as less of a horribly, awfully, fucked-up human being.

Ah, yeah, that I can get. I've seen way, way too many Light supporters to be comfortable with comparisons to real life fucked up people, myself. I am sympathetic towards Light, and like him as a character. But the only reasons I'm sympathetic towards him are for the same reasons I'm sympathetic towards Hitler- I wouldn't excuse what he did, I wouldn't say he didn't deserve what he got, and hell, he should have gotten it much earlier than he did to spare the lives of as many people as possible- but it's always a sad thing when a human being gets that fucked up in the head, goes that insane, and falls that far. It's actually worse for real life people, because god, if I think about it too much, I actually realize that they were children once with futures and ETC ALL SORTS OF SAPPY THINGS I SHOULDN'T THINK ABOUT. It gets too melodramatic, but my point remains. XD

See, I have too much Holocaust-baggage to even want to consider the better aspects of Hitler. I'm sure he had some, but I really don't care. In fact, if I had a time machine, I would happily go back and shoot him in the head before he ever reached maturity.
Any regret I might have felt over him is long used up by regretting the millions of lives he ended, and the family I could have had.

^_^ Overall, though, I think we are in agreement, I just may not have been the most articulate. I haven't slept much this week at all.

That I can get- and I can actually agree, if it was a choice between letting history go as it did and going back in time to kill Hitler as a child... it'd suck, it really would, if it was before he went insane, but it would be the best, right thing to do. Hell, if you wanted to argue that it'd be a mercy to put down someone before they became that much of a monster, it'd be the best for him, too. Le sigh.

Yeah, I think we are! And haha, no, I didn't explain myself fully either. Just a case of hard-to-tell-over-the-webz. ;) And ewww, get some sleep, being exhausted sucks. D:
