If you're going to reply to anybody, you might as well reply to everybody. It's always kind of off-putting when an author only ever seems to reply to a few of the same people and it's like they're having this clique-y conversation and everyone else who comments is beneath their notice.

(If a fic has been up for a long time, though, it's completely understandable an author may not still be checking for and replying to comments and late-comers may not get a reply.)

Yes, the only time I don't reply to every single comment I get is when someone reads a completed multi-chapter fic in one go and I sign in to discover I have 20+ comments from the same person. Then, I'll usually just reply to a few or the last one.

Otherwise, you best believe I send SOMETHING back to people who took the time to let me know they appreciate my fic.

legit tho what if you have 10 comments all saying "great fic, I liked it!" with surprisingly little variation in wording?

I never know what to say to those, and that point a one-word "thanks!" literally does look like I'm padding my comment count.

You could try a simple :-)

I do that sometimes when the comment is a simple "I liked this"

Don't worry about inflating the count. I remove the obligation of worrying about inflation from you.

I always just say a variation on the theme of 'thank you'. Thanks! Thank you! Thanks a lot!

Because they took the time to say something, i feel i should take that bare minimum of time to reply.

And fuck any asshole who thinks i'm doing it 'comment numbers' or wtfever. That's just so fucking lame.

Uggghh, it's dumb, but I commented on a fic once, and when I went back to it, the author had replied to the two comments before me and one comment after mine, but not me, and it bothered me way more than it should have. /rant

(Anonymous) 2018-04-29 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've had that happen too! And yes it's dumb but UGH it bugs. It makes me not want to comment anymore, when it could've just been an oversight.

I did stop commenting once when the author did this gushy A/N thank you to one person in particular and said that person's reviews were the best. Um, okay, well, enjoy having that person comment on every chapter then and you clearly don't care about mine. I make sure never to single out any particular reviewer/commenter in my thank yous because I don't want anyone to think I don't appreciate ALL of them.
