For Self Insert/Drawerfic Writers/Readers

(Anonymous) 2018-04-28 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
When you write a self insert, do you tend write these types of fic in first person, third person, or second person? Why? Is it merely stylistic? Or does it help in your enjoyment?

What has been your favorite self insert to write? And was it just fun or cathartic, as a secret from a day or two ago stated?

Thanks!

As a reader: I prefer reading self-inserts set in the 3rd person, it feels a little... like, when it's in first person, it's more immediate but it's also less comparable to me, so it's actually easier for me to get into the story if it's in third person.

when it's drawerfic idgaf I just write what feels right at the time. tbh as I've aged I've found it harder to write in first person because even though it's drawerfic I'm still embarrassed about myself.

but the one time I actually posted a self-insert - a fic that, 18 years later, I still get people emailing me about asking me to repost it on AO3 - I wrote in first because the "me" in the story was so bsae-level everyperson that other fans could self-insert themselves as "me" and get the same experience as if they had written it for themselves. my self-insert was an anti-Mary Sue and rarely spoke of real life experiences that were unique to me as an individual, so I think that helped it take off in popularity.

Please, just don’t. Self inserts are the scourge of fandom.

All my drawerfic is third person, with an OC as the self insert. I hate first person, only like second person in limited applications, and hate the new trend of having a literal blank or "your name here" for the name in self inserts.
