What do you mean?

Re: 105

[identity profile] tacky-tramp.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well first of all, expecting other people to stop talking about something that ~*~harshes your squee~*~ is a giant glowing beacon of entitlement. DL, DR.

Secondly, the whole idea of using fandom as an "escape" from real-world oppression presumes that no one actually encounters hurtful racism and sexism and so on in fandom. Which is wildly untrue. And pretty much the only way you can believe that is if you aren't encountering it -- which makes you very lucky, and almost certainly a member of the dominant group.

Discussions about racism and sexism in fandom are not the problem. Racism and sexism in fandom are the problem. Period.

I couldn't agree with you more and it saddens me to see people here agreeing with that secret. :-(

Re: 105

Big honkin' WORD.

Re: 105

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It is privileged because it is obviously someone who does not experience racism and sexism or does not notice them. They are whining that their relaxation is spoiled by people discussion serious real world problems. Fiction is a mirror to real life and it is valid and important to discuss issues like racism and sexism within fandom.

Re: 105

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OH NOES! God forbid people want to have fun with anything instead of obsess on the state of the Real World 24/7!

Re: 105

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Like she said above, GIANT GLOWING BEACON OF ENTITLEMENT.

Re: 105

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Your mom's a glowing beacon of entitlement.

Re: 105

[identity profile] alleykitten.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I love "your mom." XD

Re: 105

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
because we haven't earned it! we work every day, deal with real life issues every day and JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT, IT'S EVERYWHERE OMG WE JUST CAN'T ESCAPE IT!!1!!!11!!

THE WORLD IS EEEENDING BECAUSE SOME ONE MIGHT ACTUALLY FEEL ENTITLED TO A LITTLE PEACE AND RELAXATION.

NONONONONO. IT ALL MUST BE SERIOUS! GET SERIOUS!

Re: 105

(Anonymous) 2008-07-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom is serious business! All us non-acafen are not True Fans, oh noes.

Re: 105

[identity profile] ms-erupt.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
By that token one could say, "God forbid people want to discuss real world problems instead of shut down and escape."

It works both ways.

Re: 105

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes it does. But just because it does doesn't mean one side is Oh So Right and the other is Evil And Wrong.

Re: 105

[identity profile] ms-erupt.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. Not favoring political discussions in fandom is cool just as having those discussions is cool. What is uncool is those people that insist that other fans having those discussions should stop because it's "harshing their squee" or vice versa. It's an incredibly self-involved and egocentric way to look at fandom.

Sigh. F!S isn't supposed to make me think this much. -_-

Re: 105

[identity profile] kita0610.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! It is so hard being a white person!

Re: 105

[identity profile] ms-erupt.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I need a "Won't somebody think of the white women?" macro and/or icon stat. Until then...

Hahaha.

Awesome.

Now I need macros of "it is hard being male," "it is hard being cisgendered" (perhaps a pic of a nice wholesome manly man being harassed by an evil tranny?), "it is hard being straight," and, for bonus points, "it is hard being Republican," and I'll be prepared to deal with the internets.

Ha! If you find those be sure to send them my way. I'll tide you over with this one in the mean time:

Oh noes, how dare you accuse someone of privileged behavior. That's like saying they eat babies and fuck their parents, unlike us pure noble enlightened acafen. :'(

Re: 105

[identity profile] ms-erupt.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Because asking someone to examine their privilege is like punching their grandmother and steam rolling their puppy. It feels so good.

Am I sad because I felt a thrill of excitement at seeing a macro I made "in the wild"?
