Not allowed according to who?

Yes I do think people who complain when people bring up racism or sexist or homophobia are part of the problem. People like you disgust me.

Let me put it this way: You wouldn't like it if you were trying to have a serious political discussion about fandom and someone came up screaming "OMG STOPPIT NOW!!!!", right? Well, people who want to just sit back and enjoy the show don't want someone barging in with a long essay on why Whedon is a misogynistic racist and making out that people who disagree are "part of the problem". There's nothing wrong with wanting to do either, and it's rude for either side to force their views on the other.

Yeah, I hate it when someone holds a gun to my head and makes me read their LJ.

Except that saying "politics should stay in political communities, fandom should stay in fannish communities" is basically saying "OMG STOPPIT NOW!!!!"

By the standard proposed by the OP, just discussing politics/oppression/whatever in fandom is being meeeeean to the people who just want to have fun. And that's what I take issue with: the idea that the moment anyone publicly tries to be Serious Business about something, they're harshing the squee of someone who doesn't want Serious Business.

And that's what bothers me about the way fandom treats politics. People like the crazy chick who insisted that Firefly is an evil black hole of racism because Zoe calls Mal "sir" are the minority among political fans, but a significant chunk of fandom acts like everyone who brings up political issues is acting just like her. Either you're a sane fan who never talks about that boring stupid political shit, or you're a crazy feminist bitch who's trying to force politics down everyone's throat. And while there are some "acafen" who turn up their noses at regular old escapist fans (note: not using escapist as a bad word here, I don't think there's anything wrong with escapism in theory), that attitude doesn't seem nearly as prevalent as most non-political fans think. Most political fans enjoy squee as much as the next--they just also happen to like talking about other issues.

Also, the OP's whining about "fag hags, feminists, liberals, and blacktivists" is...kind of seriously gross. It almost makes me want to call troll at how much it reeks of privilege and resentment of minorities. :/

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SANITY.

Thank you. All the people on my flist who discuss political issues as they pertain to fandom are very sane, cool types who keep the discussions to where they're relevant or invited, don't hijack threads with them, and are perfectly capable of engaging in squee.

I don't see anything wrong with not wanting to discuss these things 24-7 but seriously, most people don't, and I do personally think that it's perfectly possible (and a very good idea) to be able to recognize where things in a canon are problematic but still be able to enjoy them as entertainment.

Amen.

I think one of the key issues here is that the people who get mad at "those mean acafen who call everyone else sexist/misogynist/racist" seem to think that being told "hey, your privilege is showing, maybe you should think about that?" is the most vile thing one human being can ever say to another. Okay, that's hyperbole, but I think you get my point. Seriously, most of us who talk about these things recognize that damn near everyone, ourselves and our friends included, has some form of privilege and trips over it sometimes; we're not trying to divide the world into "us cool enlightened people who are never mean to pure virtuous minorities" and "you ignorant bigoted louts."

Unfortunately, there ARE people like that and they're so loud and vocal about it that it makes people automatically flinch and cry oppression when anything remotely political comes up. Well, sometimes. There ARE willfully ignorant jerks who ignore it because they want to keep living in their well-fed white bread world of fake perfection and not think about the fact that people other than them need things.

I'm part of the first example, though. The second group makes me want to smash things. >:[

Yes, there are, and they can be some of the worst bigots around. See: the attitudes of certain so-called radical feminists towards transgendered people, the white privilege endemic to mainstream feminism, the tendency of some anti-racism activists to dismiss women's concerns as beneath their notice, etc.

However, I have seen far more dismissals of all political discussion as falling into this category than I have actual political discussion that falls into this category. (Uh...if that sentence makes any sense.)

This will sound mean, but, the fact you admit that you didn't read the secret properly before you replied to it does hint at the possibility that you might sometimes reply to other things without reading them properly first. Next time you read political things in a fandom community that make you feel "oppressed" you could maybe remember that and spend more time thinking about them first, though, you are always free to not read them at all if you don't want to.
