Yes. Duh. That's why the secret is a secret and not a long-ass LJ post on why both stories are exactly alike. They're not. That doesn't mean that all the parallels are just in my head though. Grenouille was incapable to feel love but when he realized that he killed himself rather than live on with that knowledge. Grenouille has issues, but killing himself is not particularly indicative of him "not having feelings" at all.

That doesn't excuse my shipping, but The Perfume is not quite as cut and dried as you think it is. My romanticizing impulse might be less about actual shipping and perhaps more about redemption. A Grenouille who instead of consuming and possessing Laure's beauty would have chosen appreciation instead, is a Grenouille who would have not been eaten in a Parisian gutter.

Grenouille could have created his own happy ending, maybe. I think about this what-if even though Grenouille doesn't deserve it. But do you know which mass murderer doesn't deserve one either, but will get it nevertheless - if only for choosing not to consume the most beautiful scent in the world?

I guess you can guess.

On a superficial note: the movie version of the Perfume totally emphasized the shippy aspects of the story.
