It’s really getting my knickers in a twist how many people are responding to this secret with HOW DARE YOU HATE ON STAY AT HOME MOMS THAT’S NOT FEMINISM!

The secret isn’t saying women can’t or shouldn’t be stay at home moms. Feminism is not the reason women and stay at home moms don’t get respect. Welcome to SOCIETY for that. If you stay at home, you're not making anything of yourself, and if you don't stay home, god you're a selfish bitch neglecting your kids, and if you don't have any kids, then you're just unfullfilled, no matter how much you say you aren't! The secret is complaining because the ending was WTF. All of their endings were WTF and tangential to their characters. However, IN PARTICULAR:

Sora became a fashion designer. (She was our tomboy who wore a HELMET???)
Mimi was put on a cooking show. (She wasn’t into cooking!)
Hikari became a primary school teacher. (What happened to her interest in photography?)
And Miyako is a stay at home mom.

Welcome to PATTERNS. Whereas, Yamato gets to be an astronaut! Taichi is an ambassador! Jyou is a doctor! Iori is a lawyer! Takeru is a journalist! Daisuke is a business owner! Koushiro is the head of a computer software company! Ken is a CRIME FIGHTER!!!

All the guys are in high-powered exciting positions! Even the dumb ones! And all the girls are regulated to stereotypically feminine careers and interests. That doesn’t mean that anyone is saying there is anything wrong with those interests, if they remotely lined up with what we saw from the show itself.

If you don’t know what Miyako’s interests are, maybe you should rewatch the show, because she DID have interests and was just as into computers as Koushiro and creating music from home with a computer. This isn’t to say she couldn’t have done it on the side or something but they never bothered to even show her doing that. They JUST showed her as a stay at home mom, and it is always a choice to show what you show.

Yes, interests change, but going from where they were to the point when they were all grown up lacked any kind of development into what we saw. How do you go from guy in a jrock band to an astronaut?

The ending sucked, and I understand how someone who loved her character would be furious at them just having her paired up with Ken (love him though I may) after her crushing on him for five seconds and then never having any interest again, and especially never having evidence that she wanted to be a mother someday. At the time it felt like a betrayal, and looking back the whole ending is still aggravating. I choose to ignore it entirely. Didn’t happen.

Pointing out dissatisfaction with that in no way undermines your own life choices. If you want to me a SAHM, then do it. If you want to be something else, and you have those dreams, then fight for that too. If you want to point out blatant sexism that is wildly OOC, then you have every right to do so.

Oh, fuck it, I agree with this so hard I'm de-anonning for it. This is what I was trying to say!

I came in to f!s today because my housemate and I met through Digifandom back in the day, and she pointed it out. SHE got it too, and I'm sure most of our old group felt the exact same way. There were... huge essays about it, which have all been deleted by Homestead.

Man, I'm sorry I missed out on these essays. I'd have loved to read them.

I actually hadn't even noticed the pattern with the girls until you pointed it out. I like those careers for them individually, but the pattern is kinda... yeah.

Man, just... thank you for your response. That's everything I wanted to say but the words failed me and auuurgh how did I come off sounding like a failsauce feminazi. YOU ARE BETTER WITH TEH WORDS.

Yeah, but if only this were actually the reason behind most fans' hatred of the ending. The majority of what I've seen is based on the idea that "housewife = oppressed." Or at least they're sure making it sound that way.

Although because of the huge time gap, I don't think anything can fairly be called "OOC," because people can and often do drastically change in that amount of time. The problem is just that it made no sense for them to show us that without explaining what happened in between to make them change.

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know who you know in fandom, so I can't speak to that. From what I'VE seen, in my little group of fandom when it was airing in the US (oh so many years ago), it was this exact reason and/or ship dissatisfaction and a desire for a more open canon like the S1 ending that caused people to hate the ending. Most people don't have a degree in gender studies to help them word things in a wait to suit everyone's taste. Of course there are going to be people out there who look down on SAHMs, because our culture looks down on them as well (so I can hardly account for what everyone thinks, and further, I don't have to because I'm talking about the OP and likeminded Digifen), but you can't just assume that everyone who disagrees with this choice is violently against SAHMs.

If I wrote a fanfic based on almost any series and threw people into random jobs that I thought would be cool for them without consideration to previously established characterization or an explaination or labeling it crackfic, I would be laughed out of fandom for the OCC. Bad writing is bad writing.

Personally for me it wasn't "oppressed" as "Oh god what a waste". Not to say that Stay-At-Home-Moms are wasting their potential, but she had previously displayed no interest that I had seen in having and raising the 2.5 kids, and was one of the two smartest characters in the series IIRC. Full-blown genius level (Ken I don't count because he had interesting circumstances). Now, I know at least one Stay-At-Home-Mom who is raising a delightful daughter who she talks about often while working on her PHD. It's entirely possible that that's what Miyako would do.

But it doesn't say she does that. She gets knocked up and raises some kids. And doesn't look particularly happy about it either, though I'm sure it was supposed to be a "Lulz, so hectic, being a mom!" scene.

YES real people would change a lot over that much time. But these aren't real people, they're characters in a cartoon, and we haven't been there 'with them' for the last 24 years. Her ending - hell, just about ALL their endings! - do not stay true to the characters that had been established and I had come to love over the last 104 episodes. That isn't "being realistic", that's bad writing.

...And clearly I was annoyed enough by it that years later it still makes me livid to think about it. o_O

And to nip any shipping related arguments in the bud - all my pairings that I liked were slash or weirder, so I knew damn well they had no chance of becoming canon.
