I hate when people say things like "Oh, don't delete your fic! Just orphan it!"

When you orphan a fic, you lose ownership of it. If later you need to edit or delete it for whatever reason, you can't.

Whether you want to delete your story because you're embarrassed by it or because you fear it might be linked back to you...

Being unable to control whether it's available online is the exact opposite of what you want!

If it's just a question of embarrassment, who gives a shit?

If it's internet detective stuff you're afraid of, OK, whatever, but

You keep control if you put it in an anon collection instead of orphaning the story. As long as it's not part of a series there will be no way to connect it to your account but you will be able to edit it, reply to comments (as 'Anonymous Creator'), and delete it later if you so desire.

While in the anon collection the fic will appear with the author "Anonymous" to everyone other than you (just like in exchanges, you'll see your own work as by "Anonymous [Your Username]").

Thanks for the tip, nonny!

Plus it's your fic. If you want to delete it, delete it. It's up to you. You don't owe anyone anything, at least not in this scenario.

And this is why I always recommend sock accounts. I have one for my wish-fulfillment/self-insert/reader fics and another for my kinkiest smut.

As far as I'm concerned it's up to the author in question as to what they want to do with their fic.

Want to delete it and have it forever be (mostly)gone from the internet? Go for it. Want to orphan it so it's still there but your name isn't attached? Go for it.

It's yours, so do what you will.

Personally if I delete a story of mine it's because I don't like it and don't want it to be online anymore. But I also rarely do that, for the most part I'll keep my older work up even if I don't care for it so much.

I'm one of those people who just throws their fic online and doesn't do anything with it ever again. So it wouldn't bother me to orphan a fic. (Doubtful that I would ever orphan a fic though.) I do what other people have suggested, and made a sockpuppet AO3 account in order to post my sinful fics.

I think it sort of depends why you want to delete it.

If you don't want it associated with you and don't want anything to with it and there are people who enjoy it, orphaning instead of deleting might make sense for you. And of course people who like to read fic are going to want a way for the fic to remain online. I think almost everyone who reads a lot of fic has had a story they really enjoyed disappear on them. Writers can do what they want with their writing, but they might not have considered orphaning or anoning a fic. Writers shouldn't be harangued for making whichever decision they feel is best, but that doesn't look like an attack to me.

Yeah, I feel ya, OP. I'm sure that the advice comes from a good place, but that doesn't make it any less annoying, especially when you hear it so frequently. It kind of reminds me of those obnoxiously gungho original fiction writers who just HAVE to tell you all about self-publishing, even if you have zero interest in self-publishing or writing original fiction... e_e;

I agree, OP. I really regret orphaning most of my fics instead of just deleting.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
There should be a privatize option (one where no one but the author can see the fic) or something. I cannot stand seeing fics deleted, it's so final. Privating would at least still give the option of public-ing it again if the author feels like it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, if you've ever posted it online, it's online. By putting it online you have legitimately lost control of whether or not it's online.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-04 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a fantastic argument against posting fic! Thanks!

If that were true I'd be able to find my long lost fics from 15 years ago that I accidentally deleted, lol.

What’d U write and where I have old screenshots and copy pastes of lots of old gifs from before I got medicated and obsessively documented fandoms
