I didn't feel it was homophobic—the reason they were trapped was much more because of socioeconomic circs. It seemed to me more about the slow strangulation of rural America than anything else. That's why I hate those AU's where they just move to San Francisco or something because Ennis at least would never have been able to do that, which was the entire point of the story.
