From all the stories I've heard, Vic totally deserves that.

But.

You've been through enough. You don't deserve to be on Encyclopedia Dramatica, Fandom Wank, &c. You don't deserve to be removed from the con by security and you probably will be.

So I vote no, don't do it.

And to everyone who justifies his homophobia by saying it's his religion: there are a lot of people in the world who manage to be Christian and not be homophobic assholes. If you want people to be fair to Christians and Christianity, how about not defending assholes who happen to be Christian on the grounds that it's discrimination to call them on their evil behaviour if they can quote Scripture they can then misinterpret to justify it?

I swear, some of you lot who say it's okay to be homophobic if you're Christian make me wonder if it was 1860, would you be defending the Christians in the South who were pulling out Bible passages to justify slavery?

(I shall now use the icon of my favourite Christian character in fandom. Because.)

I don't remember anyone saying that. She didn't even mention the homophobia, she was just pissed that he believed in God and talked vocally about it. I'd tell him to shut up if he were openly homophobic at a con too, because he'd be doing just what she's suggesting doing: publicly attacking someone's beliefs and/or lifestyle.

He's made a lot of homophobic/anti-yaoi remarks--it's what everyone who complains about him everywhere complains about. (I'm not really up on English voice actors because I don't watch dubs. But you hear stuff, you know?)

I also do not think that a panel at a con is the place for "witnessing" unless it's relevant to the topic being discussed, but the moderators need to be responsible, as the below commenter suggested, and tell him that preaching his faith should be done in his religious service that he's leading, not on a panel which presumably is gathered to discuss some other topic.

*nodnod* I know nothing about dubs or their actors outside of some names, so I assumed this wasn't about that because she didn't even mention it.

I also don't consider mentioning 'I'm so thankful that God has etc. etc.' to be 'witnessing'. Actively trying to convert fans or making general hateful statements about nonChristians/homosexuals/whatever? Totally out of line. Stating that you're a Christian and excited about it and thankful for God's role? As long as you're not doing it so oppressively that you're not actually discussing the show you're promoting, well, I'd rather he expressed his opinion than be shouted down really. And it's the open appreciation of God that seemed to be pissing the OP and most of the agreeing commenters off.

The problem is really two-fold though:
1. He's some kind of youth minister. (I honestly forget exactly how he's trained or which church)
2. Sees himself as God's gift to anime fandom in North America. (he is really self-centered)

Between his ego and his training he gets really preachy at times. Most people I know that have had to deal with him on a professional level cannot STAND him. Unfortunately he has lots of adoring fans so he gets away with things that other people wouldn't.

It sounds like he's an ass and a half. :( I'm still annoyed with the original secret and some of the commenters, but if this is their beef rather than just his general vocalness then not half as much as I was. I just think that kindness is the best way to deal with this shit, no matter how bad a deal life has handed you. Life eventually hands a bad deal to everybody.

Vic deserves SOMEONE telling him to get over himself somehow. Unfortunately this seems to have turned into some kind of argument about hating religion instead of PROBLEMS WITH VIC. Caitlin Glass is very strongly Christian as well, and you don't have the same issues with her talking about her beliefs during anime voice acting panels. What really needs to happen is the panel moderator needs to speak up and say that it's not the place to discuss religion.

Yeah, I agree, but frequently con panel moderators have no idea how to actually moderate. :)

Some of us manage to reconcile being Christian and being queer. Judging two-point-some billion people by their worst not-even one percent of one percent of one percent is just... frustrating.
