pleated pants

(Anonymous) 2018-05-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They're back. Would you wear them?

I've already gotten a pair because, contrary to all fashion advice ever, I've found that exaggerating my enormous hips actually makes them look smaller?

I google pleated pants but they just look like the normal way a guy irons his dress pants?

Re: pleated pants

(Anonymous) 2018-05-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What. No. They've been out of style for men, too, for about 30 years.

I can't tell the difference. http://www.moderngentlemanmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/pleated-flat-front-mens-pants.jpg

Huh, well then it might be safe to say this thread will be of little interest to you?

I'm with you that I see the men's style all the time. Either that or I can't tell the difference between pleated men's pants and whatever has been in style for the last decade or so.

But after googling I have to say that I find the women's style awful.

..... I honestly don't know why I try to talk about clothes on a comm that has subzero interest in clothes.

I think some do have an interest in clothes? But tastes vary a lot and I honestly don't like this style. See comment below; unfortunately my comment posted before I was done, for whatever reason.

But after googling I have to say that I find the women's style awful. I don't like the look and only few women actually manage to pull it off. I certainly wouldn't.

To be fair, it's a bit difficult to see the difference in that particular picture. Compare these two:

The fact that they went out of style doesn't mean men won't still wear them. Society doesn't put that much pressure on men (specially older men) when it comes to following fashion trends.

Re: pleated pants

(Anonymous) 2018-05-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
God forbid we talk about clothes without turning it into a societal gender issue.

Of course men still wear them. And women never stopped wearing mom jeans. But you do see styles come and go in popularity for both genders.

Re: pleated pants

(Anonymous) 2018-05-06 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Buddy, the way the anon (you?) talked about it made it seem like they believed people had stopped wearing them/making them altogether just because they went out of style. I was just trying to explain why other anons thought pleated pants were just regular men dress pants, which is because they still use them. And I'm not trying to cry misogyny or whatever, I'm just saying that when it comes to clothes it's way easier to find supposedly out-of-fashion menswear that's still widely used.

Re: pleated pants

(Anonymous) 2018-05-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
All of my pants tend to become the bastard step-sibling of pleated when I fix them to fit me better. I have a huge ass, so the pants that can fit around it tend to have a too wide waist that just hangs loose on the back. I hate wearing belts, and they would just bunch that loose fabric uncomfortably anyway, so I sew small pleats all over the back portion of the waist.

I also wear a lot of elastic fabrics and pants with a slightly low waist because those don't need so much fixing.

OMG SOMEONE WHO GETS IT

This is why I love the return of pleated pants. Finally, pants that fit both my waist and my hips.

Paper bag waist pants are also very in style right now. My huge ass self feels so vindicated.

Here, here. I wore pleated pants through most of my young adulthood exactly because of that problem. Puberty took me from a stick to an hourglass and I HATED it because suddenly instead of suspenders, I had gaposis even with a belt if I tried to wear any other style.

Think I might have to go pants shopping now, if they're back in style!

I rather like pleated pants, but I don't look particularly good in them. I think they have to be really kind of high-end pleated, because cheap pleated pants from, say W-M or Target tend to just look odd and bunchy.

The overall cut definitely has to be just right.

Yes. And, frankly - the material is important, too, because nothing looks worse than some horrible poly-cotton blend. A nice, light wool or linen looks best, to me - heavy fabric does not suit the pleat.

If they're comfy and full-length. My only requirements for pants, really.
I'm seeing some wide leg pants in stretchy fabric around right now and I'm all over those. If I can stick a pair of cute ankle boots on and pretend I'm not basically wearing pyjamas in public, I'm happy.
