Fandom Questions

(Anonymous) 2018-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I have a question, and others can ask questions too.

Do you refer to an individual fan fiction as a 'piece' of fanfic or something else? Asking because I'm writing an article about fandom spaces, and I've always referred to 'pieces of fanfic' and my editor asked if this was correct and... I don't know any more!

I say "a fic."

This. I just called them fic/s.

+3. They've always just been fics to me, and a singular one would just be "a fic."

+4 I used to say "a fanfic", but "fic" is easier.

Same. "A piece of fanfic" sounds super weird to me.

AYRT I didn't know it was weird, I must have a weird circle of fandom friends!

Just say "fic." I've never heard "piece of fic" before.

AYRT Haha I'm super glad i asked now, apparently my small fandom circle is the only place that says 'piece' :)

I tend to go with either fics or stories. Piece actually makes me think article. It's not wrong, because piece can refer to 'a literary or journalistic composition, usually short, in prose or verse' (dictionary.com), just not common.

"Piece of fanfic" sounds to me like saying "piece of novel" or "piece of poem" as opposed to "piece of fiction" or "piece of poetry".

"Piece of fan-created fiction" or even "piece of fanfiction" do sound better, but I would never use "piece of fanfic" or "piece of fic".
