Media references that will live for a long time
(Anonymous) 2018-05-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)I've never seen an episode of Friends, but I still occasionally know when someone's making a reference to it.
I've never heard a How I Met Your Mother reference, that I know of, and I didn't recognize it from the picture.
Most people basically "know" what Frankenstein (well, Frankenstein's monster) and Dracula are, but I don't know how many people have read those books.
I see a lot of Harry Potter references, and a lot of people who haven't read the books still seem to know some of the basic stuff, like Voldemort is the bad guy, and what the houses represent. I have seen a some backlash toward gratuitous Harry Potter references, though. I wonder how long that will last, like will people still talking about Voldemort long after people have stopped reading the books?
For that matter, what currently-popular media do you think people will still care about 10 or 20 or 50 years into the future, and what do you expect will be forgotten (or only occasionally read/watched so someone can make a funny recap talking about how cheesy it is)?
