I have so many fond memories of this movie-- thank you for making me remember that it even existed-- I really want to watch it again, I think I have it in my DVDs somewhere.

And yes, the cherubs were a bit much now that I think about it

Man, I loved this movie as a kid-whenever I'd go to my grandma's house, we'd watch this a lot (along with 'Pollyanna'). So anytime I happen to catch it somewhere it brings back good memories.

I've only seen bits and pieces of the remake, so I can't really properly comment on it on its own merits. But yeah, the original version is great.

Me too with my grandmother! She always would rent movies like that, The Absent Minded Professor, Tomasina-- It's part of why I love it so much, because it's just a really really happy memory!

DA. I had something of an opposite experience with my grandmother, in that I introduced her to an old Disney live-action, more or less by accident. I'd found a copy of Escape to Witch Mountain on DVD, and brought it with me to my Nan's, where circumstances contrived to have me, a theoretically adult 28-year-old, my 70-something grandmother, and my 16 year old cousin alone in the house one night. I asked if I could put on a movie, and my Nan asked me if it was some sort of adult movie that would traumatise my poor young cousin. My teenage cousin sitting in the corner on his laptop quite possibly watching porn for all anyone knew, and me standing there with my 40-year-old Disney movie. We came to a bit of a silent agreement not to say anything that would traumatise Nana, and then I introduced her to the wonders of 1970s disney movies.

She had fun. Her reaction to the RV starting to fly at the end was adorable.

That is the best comment ever and I have no words for how that made my heart go 'awwww'.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I haven't seen this in years. I should watch it again one of these days.

You're right, it is a better movie.

Though, Natasha Richardson was also quite pretty in the remake. Makes me sad thinking about her.

But yes, the cherubs were very odd.

Of the Lindsay Lohan Disney movie remakes, only Freaky Friday was sort of on par with the original and Herbie was terrible.

Freaky Friday was a book I loved as a kid but I didn't think any movie version of it did it justice.

Wow, I forgot about Herbie as well-- all these movies that I've seemingly forgotten about

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. I loved this movie as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think both versions good but I've seen the older version more. I like the cherubs.

Sugar-water and mountain lion sticks.

Oh man, I never saw the remake, but I watched the original so many times when I was a kid in the 80s. I love Hayley Mills. I watched Summer Magic many times as well.

Oh man, yes! I grew up with an old VHS of this at my grandma's house and I adored it to pieces!

I saw the remake when it came out and it was okay, I certainly enjoyed it well enough, but it didn't stick with me the way the original did, and whenever I see people talk about being nostalgic for it, I just feel kind of... /shrug I wish more people my age knew the original.

Plus I love the little song they sing to their parents!

Fun fact that the almost step mom in the original is the woman who introduces herself as "Aunt Vicky" in the remake!

:D

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I love them both equally... even as an adult...

+1

Same!

My parents divorced when I was eight - I'm 38 now - and my sister and I watched the fuck out of this as some sort of weird wish fulfillment.
