Re: Fic commissions?

Yeah, fic commissions are a thing. I've had people pay me for fic, and so have a few of my writing friends. I don't see how it should be any different from a one-off art piece. It's not like I'm printing bound copies of fic to sell at conventions. If you feel up to it and want to sell fic, go for it. Get that money.

Op - what kind of details do you expect from the commissioner about what they want? I understand the process more with art, but I'm worried about striking the balance of having enough freedom that I can get into it, but knowing what the commissioner wants well enough that I make something they enjoy. At least personally, I feel there are less pitfalls there with drawing commissions, so I'm not sure what to expect...

I asked for barebones information generally. Fic length, what characters/ship they wanted front and centre, any requests for particular AU or plot. And if I was working with OCs, I asked for information about the OC's backstory and voice (voice is very important, they need to sound like themselves).

My commissions started with a conversation, figuring out what people wanted or didn't want and where I could have fun. If they only had a vague idea, I'd float plot ideas past them and see if they liked one more than the other. Sometimes people just wanted me to surprise them and gave me a lot of freedom. And sometimes people knew EXACTLY what they wanted, especially if they were commissioning smutfic. It really varies, the same way it varies with art commissions.

I think the only real issue, is people are more used to commissioning art than they are fic. They just say they want a fic about these characters in these settings. And I have to pull out of them things like character voices, histories, quirks, or anything else that'll effect how I write.
