But he was. The Russo brothers said in a recent podcast that Loki (along with Heimdall and some of the Asgardians) were killed to motivate Thor to go after Thanos. Which is fucking stupid because Thor, like you said, needs no motivation to go after Thanos.

Fridging is a specific trope. It references the fact that women were so often killed to give men motivation. So I don't really think a male character can be fridged.

Yeah, for characters like Loki (male, powerful), getting killed is more for the purpose of showing the audience how strong the villain is. I'm sure there's a name for that trope as well.

The Worf Effect?

Aye I always thought that too, at least that was the definition I learned when I entered fandom ages ago. Loki was killed to motivate Thor but it was more just a plot-device (ymmv as to how lazy etc it is obviously) whereas Gamora is probably a better example of fridging in this film even though it was more to make the audience see Thanos's pain than motivate him.

Both those deaths kinda annoyed me though! For different reasons. I wonder if the Soul Stone plays fast and loose with the definition of love because Gamora was right "this isn't real love" - he loved the idea of her as his heir.

Absolutely.

Okay, but I'm still going to use the term because 1) there's no well known, simple term for male characters that I know of and 2) the basics of the term (characters died to motivation other character) still applies and can be understood.

DA, you're wrong though. Stop wilfully spreading misinformation bc that IS NOT the basics of the term
