I sometimes feel like most people don't actually listen to the lyrics of the music and its always baffled me a little since the words, to me, are just as important as the tune they're set to. And this song always has bugged me. Look, I get being loyal and loving through the rough times but if you're automatically going to go with the 'if I end up in prison' question, I'm going to wonder why that's you're go to quiz question on how much I love you. And I'm not going to blindly promise you that no matter what you do I'll stick by your side and continue to love and support you either. If you're the BTK killer I'm going to dump your ass once I find out. Hell, I grew up in an alcoholic family so I'm not even going to give you unlimited free passes on trying to break your addiction and backsliding because I already wasted a huge amount of my life unwillingly that way. I can think of three recent songs that, sung by men, seem to expect the woman to ride or die through some pretty shit situations and nah, dude. I may love you but I love myself more. That's not a romantic song. That's some guy looking for an enabler who is so lacking in self-worth that they'll 'never give up no matter what'. Sometimes - you need to cut bait and run. I get romance songs aren't supposed to be realistic they're supposed to be over the top and 'a love to die for' but - I think I've hit 'too old for your shit' agewise. Sing to me about sticking together through the rough times because life sucks sometimes but getting out on the other side because we both helped each other and we're still in love and best friends. Not 'if I do bad things, just me, I'm the only one doing bad things, but if I do them will you still love me no matter what or how long it lasts?' To which I tell my radio 'hell no'.

I sometimes feel like most people don't actually listen to the lyrics of the music

I do this a lot, actually. English isn't my first language, so I grew up actually unable to understand most of them. These days, I watch most of my shows and movies in English, but somehow I've not broken from the habit of listening to songs as music with meaningless vocalizing I don't even bother trying to make sense of. It's easier these days, bit I still often need to make an active effort to pay attention to lyrics for them to register. ...Plus, listening to an old fave always holds the risk of accidentally catching something I didn't before and going D: so it's safer not to if I don't want to lose songs younger!me loved.
