Which did you enjoy during their peak?

I loved being in HP fandom back then, but that was an exception. I'm mostly always late to the party and join after the hype.

Yeah, I liked the HP fandom better when it was about loving the books. Now it seems "uncool" in fandom to like the books.

As someone who's been on the outskirts of the Harry Potter fandom since it began: Wait, really? Why would it be uncool to prefer the books?

i think it's not preferring the books that has become uncool, but preferring jkr as an author. that's partly a tumblr-climate thing ("this content creator made a thing that does not address every specific minority i can possibly think of, THEY ARE LITERALLY SATAN and if you like them you must hate poc/queer people/women/disabled people/etc"), partly a content-output thing ("here's more bonus content that not everybody necessarily wants, like fun facts about wizards pooping their pants"), with some complaints being more legit than others.

After the hype: Breaking Bad.

I wasn't super active, but I miss X-Files fandom back in the day when there were discussions on Usenet after every episode. It was so much fun to read. :(

I am happier with the Teen Wolf fandom now because it seems like Stiles/Derek fic is less overwhelming.

IDK if this qualifies, but I had a much easier time with The 100 than most people entirely because I started binging it after That One Scene That Pissed Off Most Of The Fandom & its fallout happened, since I was prepared for it, lowered my expectations accordingly & could enjoy the romance (for what it was) a hell of a lot more than if I hadn't known.

Almost every anime applies here.

Buffy. Tolkien fandom is nicer since the movie-only fans have either left or gone their separate ways.

Because how dare the movie fans have their fun too? wtf

Don't bother. Tolkien purists are so far up themselves, the only hope is that they'll eventually burrow all the way to another dimension.

Ugh. I can't stand Tolkien purists.
