Re: Non-Americans, what do you find puzzling about American culture?

I'm Canadian and I thought you guys did? My aunt/cousins live all throughout the American South & always have to remind us not take off our shoes at the door. And I've been to a few parties in New York state where everyone kept their shoes on (even in the middle of winter!), so that's my experience.

I mean, it depends on where you are, and also what the circumstances are, and the kind of floor that it have, etc. There just aren't really any universal norms about it.

I think it's probably true that Americans are more likely to have guests keep their shoes on, especially if it's not a carpeted floor. But that's as far as I'd go with it.

That's still a pretty small sample size, though. I've been to parties where I've been told there's no need to take my shoes off, but that's the hosts trying to make sure I'm not uncomfortable running around in socks/bare feet. And I wouldn't expect formal parties to involve taking one's shoes off.

I live in western N.Y. state, where we get a metric fuckton of snow (roughly), and everyone i know takes their snowy/salty shoes/boots off at the door for most normal/informal occasions. (Most take them off all year round). If its a formal party, generally not, though.
