Re: Non-Americans, what do you find puzzling about American culture?

Oh man. I live in the heart of Silicon Valley California, and i drive past a Baptist church on my way to work. They have one of those signs where you have all the letters and spell your own messages out, and they regularly put up things like (no, really):

1 CROSS + 3 NAILS = 4 GIVEN

and

KNOW JESUS. KNOW PEACE.
NO JESUS? NO PEACE!

My favorites are the ones that say JESUS IS ALIVE BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT

like

no, motherfucker, that's not what that means

YES!!! Theres a big billboard on the corner by my house and that was on the billboard for a week or so earlier this year! My husband would shake his head and say "That's not what that means...." Every. Time.

Can someone explain to me what this means? I think I understand it to be that Jesus' death was vitally important to the forgiveness of people's sins, hence Jesus still being alive would take away from that, but I just want to make sure.

no, that's not the point at all. granted, evangelical/nondenominational sects tend to emphasize the death way more than the resurrection but both are still part of the dogma

I used to be entrenched in this culture and basically what happens is, christians take some kind of well-known phrase and put a Jesus-y twist on them (back in my day, e.g., they twisted the Coke slogan into "Jesus is the Real Thing.") so all I can see here is someone heard the phrase "reasonable doubt" and tried to put their Jesus twist on it. Despite the fact that that is a term from law & justice and not a pop culture phrase, I mean, it's the worst possible thing you could try to twist. It also doesn't make any sense either linguistically or theologically. But white American Christianity is all about marketing, not theology.

Ah, I wasn't registering "beyond reasonable doubt" as the legal term. I live nearby some religious places (like literally down the street) so I guess I'm used to seeing overly bombastic religious phrases that don't make a lot of sense.

You make a great point about American Christianity being about marketing. God, know that I know it's based off an existing phrase, I'm kinda peeved by it now lol.
