Hoo boy do I hate this movie.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-15 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I really liked this movie, do people not?

I liked it a lot and I normally don't give a rat's ass about Disney movies

It was soooo boring.
I hated the lightning bug.
I hate the prince.
I hate the old medicine woman and her song which felt like it went on for fucking EVER.
I hate the alligator.
I like Tiana.
I like Tiana's friend.
I love the villain and his song. But what was his motivation again?
I liked Tiana's goals and I HATE HATE HATE how the whole movie was basically "Pfff, you're wrong for wanting to work for your dreams. Working for your dreams is stupid. Everything will turn out all right in the end. *Slack off slack off slack off*"

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
All of this, almost exactly.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
It was trying to make the point that yes, you have to work to achieve your goals, but you also need to do other things too. Balance work and fun. Tiana was running herself ragged trying to save up enough money to open her own restaurant. She wasn't doing anything else except working several jobs and getting a few minutes of sleep. She was going to crash and burn if things hadn't changed.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah this...

I mean, the first real glimpse we get of adult Tiana is her walking into her room in the morning all haggard and exhausted, then just flopping on her bed. Only to get up a second later because she had to get ready for her other job...

Also, her mother talked to her about how her father worked himself to the bone. And it was obvious she and other people thought Tiana was just pushing herself to the extreme.

It was boring. I didn't finish it. I don't know WHY it was boring - maybe for one of the reasons you listed above - but I didn't connect with the film.

I like this movie, mostly the music and how it's all very Jazz/Blues themed, but the message of it does unfortunately get garbled by some clunky writing.

Oh and I think I was supposed to care more when the firefly got smushed but I didn't really?

Tiana and Charlotte are great though and Naveen has his amusing moments.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
It threw me off that he wasn’t actually smushed like a bug. I expected they’d just cut away and you knew, instead of magically being whole and able to say goodbye. I get that it’s a cartoon but Disney gave us the Lion King and Fox and the Hound and Tarzan, and in this same movie a guy gets DRAGGED TO HELL, but we have to hand-wave what happens when you step on an insect? It was so off-kilter tonally.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was cute. I loved Tiana and Charlotte.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I loved charlotte and tiana, AND the old witch lady.... But I really felt like the movie needed to slap 'spoiled rich boy' naveen down WAY harder than it did..

Tiana will regret marrying him when she has a baby on one hip, is stirring a pot of gumbo, trying to fill orders and Naveen is fucking around with the orchestra doing nothing.

I thought the whole point of the scene at the end of the movie with them both in the restaurant was to show that Naveen HAD changed and WOULD be helping her with the restaurant? I mean, he's not in the kitchen mucking up her family recipes, but not everyone can cook. A good atmosphere is important to a successful restaurant, after all. Naveen would probably be the one toting the baby around, playing her music and keeping out of Tiana's way until she demanded it back for feeding/nap time lol

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that Charlotte wasn't an asshole friend. She was a spoiled but she wasn't awful. I liked her friendship with Tiana.

I loved this movie and Naveen? Hottest Disney prince.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love listening to the soundtrack just on its own but I felt like the musical numbers slowed down the story instead of serving it when watching the movie...

I liked the characters and design, loved the animation, but yeah, it was clunky and deserved better.

one reason I liked it is because I thought the music was MUCH better than most Disney movie music

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
This is how I felt too. The pacing was REALLY badly done IMO and it made the part with them as frogs feel incredibly draggy.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It has beautiful animation and good music, which is the only thing Disney ever did well. I always thought nostalgia was a huge part of the brand and that's why people are more critical of the new movies.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It was a weak story, tbh. They’ve always done well with book and fairy tale adaptations but I don’t think The Frog Prince had enough plot to it to start with, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
At least one historical version of the Frog Prince fairytale strongly implies that the princess changed the frog back through the power of fucking. The Brothers Grimm version involves the princess throwing the frog into a wall.

The problem is less a lack of plot and more Disney's determination to play it ultra safe.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Link to that historical version?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I love all the human parts, but hate all the animal parts, which leaves very little of the movie that I love, which is sad.

Personally, I love the movie, flaws and all. Part of it is because it reminds me of the things I actually enjoyed about living in Louisiana (the food and the music, mainly. GOD I'd kill for a plate of beignets right now), and part of it is because of Charlotte and her father. The first time I saw PatF, I was expecting them to betray Tiana so hard. I mean, spoiled rich white girl desperate for a prince and her good ol' Southern boy dad? And they're openly friends with a lower-class black family in 1920s New Orleans? I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it never did. Charlotte, spoiled and hyper as she was, was a true friend to Tiana from beginning to end, and Big Daddy treated her and her mama with kindness and respect and never had the slightest problem with his daughter's friendship with her, even though it could have majorly damaged his reputation and social standing in the upper class white circles of New Orleans. Maybe it wasn't realistic for them to be that way, given the setting, but it sure was refreshing.

Also, Dr. Facilier was straight up awesome-sauce, and his villain song kicked all manner of ass.
