(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 06:23 am (UTC)(link)I get that being condescended to and disagreed with sucks, but it sucks more to be hated and feared because you’re not white or straight or Christian. Because everybody, not just straight white rich Christians, has been condescended to and disagreed with at some point. But condescension and disagreement aren’t discrimination or bigotry. They might hurt your feelings, but they won’t kill you, by inches or instantly, like some kinds of bigotry might.
Speaking as a person who usually votes for liberal candidates and policies, I rarely respect politicians even in my own party. Why should I respect those in the Republican party who hate me and my friends and family not because of our political views but because we exist? I don’t know if you’re the same anon who claimed upthread that being anti-Muslim and anti-trans was a political viewpoint, but being Muslim or trans is not a political position. They don’t hurt anyone by existing. A vanishingly small number of Muslims commit acts of terrorism, just like a vanishingly small number of men become school shooters.
The way you phrase your condemnation of liberals makes it sound like your main or even only issue with them is that they’re condescending toward you and/or people you identify with. Do you believe the conservatives in power are on your side and view you as their equal, or what?
Speaking for myself, I think most career politicians would look down on me personally. But my belief doesn’t influence my vote nearly as much as the kind of policies they (say they will and occasionally even do) vote for.
I might be missing something because my self-esteem is measured in negative numbers, but why is a condescending lack of respect the worst sin a politician can commit toward you? Aren’t you worried their policies might separate you from your family and friends and life (travel bans and ICE crackdowns), permanently fuck up your health or beggar you (screwing with Obamacare and Medicaid), poison your neighborhood (EPA deregulation), and on and on? I wish a potential loss of pride was my biggest problem. Why is it yours? Aren’t you worried about anything else?
