SSI does have a (disturbingly low) limit on liquid assets, but I'm not sure how much a motorcycle counts against that. And it is possible to collect SSI and work part time. It's not necessarily "incapable of doing any sort of work whatsoever."
It sounds like the motorcycle was a valuable asset the Social Security Administration were trying to get him to sell. This is what makes me angry about the system. If you have $2000 in the bank, you lose SSI benefits. The system is designed to keep the beneficiaries poor, and discourages saving money. Is that smart? Do you think maybe someone who can't hold a job might have a reason to save money?
