I will use "Mom" if I write in American setting, or call the train line a "subway" rather than the underground, etc., but I won't change my spelling for words like "colour" or "realise". I know I'll only bugger it up and write them the proper way the next time anyway, and I won't catch it because it's not wrong to my eyes.

I don't mind the spelling differences for a word that sounds the same, but 'mum' is pronounced differently from 'mom'.
