? In that time period (Dark Ages for the earliest stories, Middle Ages for Sword) shuffling aristocratic kids around for fosterage was really common. And sure, Wart didn't come with a pedigree, but Merlin the Enchanter was the one who handed him to Ector - the kid was never a nobody. And yes, starting them off as pages, then squires - with a lot of service mixed in with the education - was the norm.

Ector was a decent man, but he wasn't odd for looking after Arthur.

+1, this was totally normal for the time period apart from Wart's parentage being a secret. I agree that Ector was pretty good as a foster dad, though.

In the movie, it's implied that Wart just sort of turned up one day and Sir Ector took him in. Merlin shows up later and Ector has no idea who he is at all.
