I've met many of the actors whose characters I ship (slash). It's quite easy for me to separate the character from the actor.

(slash)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
The way they worded it is kind of amusing but it is relevant info. The powers that be often react differently to the idea of slash shipping than to the idea of het shipping.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm shipping the characters, not the actors. And some of the smut (okay, a lot of the smut) I read for my OTP is seriously OOC, so that makes the seperation even easier.

It's not real.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Any more than just having watched the actor simulate sex on screen or on stage. If you can't separate the fiction from reality, then yeah, I understand why you wouldn't want to meet them.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna buck the trend and +1 you, dear secret poster, even though I'm not into any LA canons, because I have seen fans right in front of me embarrass themselves hard in the presence of actors over this very thing. It's not you who can't separate fiction from reality, it's them.

If you've ever been to a panel at a major convention (like SDCC or a fandom-specific con) where fans in the audience talk directly to the actors about their fic, their headcanons, ask them what underwear they wear, etc, you don't know how actually awful it is for fandom and actors to collide. OP may not be that kind of person (thank god) but I can understand secondhand embarrassment about those fans eventually tainting even your own perfectly normal encounters with said actors. Once you see some actor cringe in the face of a fan who's standing there going on and on about their slashfic with mpreg and babies, it kind of ruins everything else afterward.

Great googly moogly, why the hell do people ask questions like that? Or bring up their slashfic? What kind of wheels are turning in their heads that makes them think that's an okay thing to talk about?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I DON'T KNOW. But they do, they're on some videos from conventions as doing so and you just have to go...what no please stop shut up please...

(Anonymous) 2018-05-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't agree. I can meet someone that I've fantasized about having sex with and not lose control of all bodily functions. I have actually fantasized about having sex with people I know IRL and still been able to talk to those people again.

Just because some fans out there aren't capable of same, I just don't see how you get to a blanket ban on meeting sexy actors.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
to each their own I guess. I can see where OP is coming from, but like I say I'm not into any LA canons so I have no risk of meeting any actors and trying to reconcile them against some of the truly outrageous kinky shit I consume. I'm sure there are people who can compartmentalize and some who can't and I just sympathize with those who can't.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Some of us know what freaky thoughts need to go unspoken, ESPECIALLY to the person who features in said thoughts. I'm not some clueless idiot who's going to approach my celebrity crush at a con and ask them what lube they prefer or if they ever secretly fucked their co star.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't bother me to meet someone I'd read or written fic about, but I wouldn't bring it up either.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I would, because of my fascination with the character/actor. I don't think I'd want the pressure of speaking with them - hello, social anxiety! But there are a handful of people I'd like to see in person, up close just to see what they're like IRL. But then I love nursing these pathetic, obsessive crushes as escapism.

I don't want to meet actors I ship with *no one*, much less the ones I write smut for, but still - it's the character, not the actor (even in RPF, it's mostly a character), so meeting them by some chance wouldn't kill me, just be...weird.

I dislike intensely, however, when people are rude and clueless enough to try and shove fic, fanart, or smut in the actor's faces. That is just not on, and extremely tacky.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think fanart is fine if it’s PGish and canon-ish, so not “this is the character you play who looks just like you being fucked over a table by the character played by your costar,” but “this is your character in that scene I thought was really cool” is probably fine.

I agree, yes. A neat drawing or portrait is one thing. XXX porn is really just....

Tacky.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who keeps posting pics of herself and different actors while gushing about specific parts of their bodies, their perceived positive or quirky traits and their family lives (!) and I have had to block those specific tags because it just bothers me too much to see. I wonder what the actors really think of her following them around from con to con and spending probably a great deal of money on very awkward pics (with her husband in tow. Poor guy).

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the cringe... I don't know people like that don't realize how they sound or that they just don't care. Like how do you live with this when everything posted on the internet is going to follow you to the grave....

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
man right up until you mentioned a husband I thought I might know who you were talking about. It's so disheartening to realize how many of these people there must be in fandom, lol.

I just don't really care enough to want to meet the actors for the characters I like, but I'm someone who is 200% about the characters and I don't really give a stuff about the people playing them beyond thinking they're hot or cute.

I probably wouldn't be able to talk to them anyway since I am stupidly shy around strangers.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is such a funny secret - no offense intended OP - people's reactions to it just amuse me. God I couldn't give a flying fuck really. If I was really into someone then I would be very shy about meeting them but I have done in the past and I didn't explode with embarassment. If I'd read slashfic about them, it wouldn't even cross my mind.

Amusing related story: I work in a shop and a guy that I ship from TV actually has like a shop he runs in my town. I was stood at the till thinking through a plot bunny and the guy was getting completely fucked hard up the ass im my mind... and just at that time one of his employees walked in the shop! I laughed to myself cus I should have said "oh it's funny you've just come in - I was just thinking about your boss taking a big cock up his ass!" Made me laugh anyway!
