147. Given that one ending deliberately copies and bookends the other ... yeah, I don't get it, either. And then I remember that 99.9% of fandom hates alt!Pete, and what originally seemed like cluelessness starts making a weird kind of sense.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-28 07:46 am (UTC)(link)I do think 99.9 percent is an exaggeration, and I'm inclined to think that most people have a sort of casual contempt for both versions of the character rather than out and out hatred. However, I left one of the rewatch comms once they got around to reviewing Father's Day because of the level of bashing of original!Pete in most reviews.
And the vast majority of fics set anytime post-Doomsday go out of their way to establish Pete as the cold, distant and oftentimes evil stepfather. Fandom as a whole has taken his initial denial of Rose to mean he could never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever in eleventy billion years accept Rose as his daughter, completely ignoring the bit in canon where he did just that. Either this is a case of their own issues trumping canon, or a case of "a character I don't like did something wrong, so I'll ignore any and all evidence of them doing something right."
No matter how you look at, Pete Tyler is distinctly unpopular, whether most people actively hate him or not.
