175. Sigh. Please watch the show before you make judgments, especially when they're so wrong. Haruhi is a subversion (and arguably a deconstruction) of the Mary Sue trope. She's good at everything, but she is terribly impatient and becomes despondent easily, so she is never content. She has a number of admirers, but it's unclear if they like her because they actually like her, or because she wants them to like her. She's the fall-back romantic interest of the main male protagonist, and it's even unclear if he genuinely likes her or just sticks around because something terrible will happen if he doesn't.

tl;dr She isn't a Mary Sue, and this would become very clear to you if you actually watched the series.

Haruhi isn't a deconstruction of the Mary Sue trope. She is barely a character with a purpose other than serving as a device to progress Kyon.

...You clearly haven't watched the series then.

You may be right that she's not a Deconstruction (didn't think that through), but I disagree that she's 'hardly a character'. She has definite characterization and character development, which puts her very firmly in the CHARACTER category. She isn't as well developed or explored as Kon, for sure, but neither are any of the other characters. Given that Kon is the narrator, and all.

BAM! You just proved why she's a Mary Sue! If they don't put up with her bullshit, she's blow up the Goddamn world! If you do something she doesn't like, who knows what might happen? She has control over EVERYTHING and you can't do a thing about it.

And her flaws? A BUNCH of Mary Sue's have those same flaws.

BAAAWWWWW!!! A character you don't like != mary-sue

Wrong. A Mary Sue is defined by people WANTING to be around her because she's so ~*speshul*~. Everybody loves her, and, if she does have flaws, they are ignored or overlooked. Not so for Haruhi. She's a bonafied oddball with no friends, and the people who DO hang out with her only do so to observe her, or to make sure that she doesn't go off the rails and destroy the World as We Know It.

As for a 'bunch' of Sues having Haruhi's exact flaws (including, but not limited to: selfishness, petulance, lack of empathy, impatience, impulsiveness, and an inferiority complex the size of a small country), I dare you to name even ONE.

And I'll amend that by adding one more condition: The primary Love Interest calls her out on many of these flaws. Repeatedly. And he only sticks around because a) he's too lazy to resist her, and b) his ACTUAL crush is a time traveler assigned to watch over her.
