115 - There is a writer in my country who has published 20+ books. They sell so well that it's almost impossible to find any of her older writings. The bad part? The heroine and the hero are the freaking same in every book, just different names and sometimes different hobbies. I still have read almost all of her books because they are entertaining crime stories. But I don't consider her all that a great writer because of the character thing.
A bit of the same goes for Twilight and Stephenie Meyer. Yes, she probably based Bella on herself, which probably is the effect of writing while imagining to be her, and a lot of people make this "mistake". Stephenie Meyer doesn't have the fantasy of JRR Tolkien or Arthur C. Clarke, she didn't make up a whole new world. She is anything but the greatest author out there, and I think it's pointless to get mad over fans who think so - there are people like that in EVERY fandom. But on her level, may I say so, I think she wrote a quite enjoyable book.
As for Bella, I don't think she is a Mary-Sue. She is kind of a blunt character which makes it easier for readers to imagine what it's like to be her, but I always loved her honesty in the books. As for the "she is the most beautiful girl and everyone loves her!!4!" - when I first read the book, I wasn't completely okay with this, either. But somewhere, in an interview Stephenie told that she based that on personal experience: being the "new girl in town", from a completely different world, boys are interested in the strange new being, while girls get naturally jealous because the girl is in the center of attention. There are countless examples of this, but that doesn't make it any less true.
But again, what I'd like to point out? Yes, there are young girls with less reading experience who think Stephenie is the new God and Twilight is their Bible, but that doesn't stand as the opinion of the whole "fanbase". There are many, way more despicable things that are overly popular than Twilight, and I'm tired of everyone throwing their popularity-hate on it. Yes, I've read all of the books and loved them. It was a great emotional experience for me, and I've never reading anything alike in while so it was special for me. Today, most of the love stories have a great physical focus and happen fast, on whim. Reading about a story where the relationship didn't start with a kiss was interesting for me. I don't think this makes Stephenie an outstanding author, but I still like the book.
Others don't. That's completely NATURAL, it's impossible to have something everyone likes. I can even accept the critiques at the quality, if it's well thought out, not hate fuelled. Not everything has to be perfect to be enoyable. I don't watch American Pie because I want to see a complex story with deep thoughts, I watch it because it's entertaining. And, in a completely different way, Twilight is entertaining for me, too. I don't think this makes me a bad person at all.
As for judging a book by the bashing and then writing a hate secret without even reading the book? I don't think that's any more mature.
Sorry for the long rant. I felt like answering, you know, so this is not only directed at this particular secret poster.
140 - Ahh, nice one. :)
145 - You can't even imagine how happy that little side-comment made me. :) Good luck with your novel!
158 - Being one of those "kind of fed up with the random slash" people, I'd like to thank you for writing this, it's really interesting to watch them from this perspective!
166 - Please tell me where is the top left panel from!
me = idiot obsessed with graphics175 - How do you know she is a Mary-Sue if you didn't watch it? I don't love Haruhi as much as the great fandom does (I've watched the show out of pure boredom), but I think she is anything but what we usually call Mary-Sue, considering she is a kind of self-absorbed, spoiled, ignorant and many bad things you may want.

Re: 115
Liking or not liking something does not make you a better, smarter, etc. person. That's what irks me the most about all these anti-Twilight secrets.
Same here.
