188. no, fandom doesn't owe anyone anything. but consider this.

if fandom is going to cry out for more fic that is not porn, then you would think it would be in their best interest to support those fics that are more in line of what they want.

instead, they will let the good fics sit and continue to beat their breasts and rend their hair about how there is no good fic, when it seems that it's out there, it never gets any notice and people figure...if no one's reading, why put it out there?

I have a good many gen/nonporn fic sitting on my harddrive that I will never post because honestly, why if it's not going to be read at all? I'm not asking for OMG DEEP AND MEANINGFUL CONCRIT. I would like at least a small note that someone even read it.

I've put hit counters on my fics and they even get lower hit counts so no, people are not reading them, even though, as I said above, there are a huge amount of crying out for them.

so...I don't post. and people continue to bitch they can't find it.

One thing I have learned from fandom during my ever-growing tenure as a rabid fannit:

Fandom is a fickle, fickle harpy. It demands one thing one day with its voracious appetite, and then the next, it tells you it has a headache, rolls over, and goes back to sleep.

...

There aren't any hard and fast rules to getting your work read, but there are things you can do to see if its them or if its you: post elsewhere: communities, The Pit, listservs, forums, different archives than what you're used to. Maybe you're not "marketing" yourself well. Maybe your stories are OMG!AWESOME but your summary sucks. Maybe you need to ensure that the reclists are aware of what you're doing, or maybe you need to bait fandom differently: participate in a ficathon or something to get a bit more exposure for you as a writer. Maybe you need a different sort of person on your flist reading your stuff. *shrug* Sad but true.

Maybe you need to write something for a different fandom, and see if that fandom responds better. (Maybe its your writing? As much as we hate to think about it because we spend so much time on certain things - I know this, trust me - maybe its just not up to scratch. Unfortunately, you might only realize it months or years later when you find said story sitting on your hard disk and you reread it.)

I do feel you on this. It doesn't happen to me as often as it used to, but I know that in my... whatever... my "career" as a fanwriter, something changed a couple of years back that suddenly made stuff start clicking. Maybe it was a motivation thing, or maybe it was changeover in the people reading, but something happened to make the experience more fulfilling for me (which thereby affected the number and quality of reviews I was getting. And I did a bunch of those things on that little list up there almost by accident.)

The big thing here is that if you give up, you've done yourself and your fandom a disservice, so none of this would matter anyway.

Chin up, you know? Keep on hammering away and eventually it'll happen.
