In theory, it's possible to change the whole premise of a show while keeping the same thematic elements the same (e.g. Megalobox versus Ashita no Joe), but the whole thing about lazy adaptations is that they're lazy and sloppy. So they don't have the same thematic feel of the original. It'd be less bad I suppose if the movie was entirely unconnected to the original, but since it's a remake it's not, and it more obvious where the creative team missed the mark at understanding what made the original good.
