Sincere question - what makes it worse than some random terrible movie that was totally unrelated to Death Note?

Nayrt but I don’t get this question... why compare it to any random terrible movie? That seems like a poor point of comparison, considering that could range from Troll 2 to Age of Ultron, depending on who you ask.

Because any random terrible movie presumably doesn't get MADE in the first place based on the EXCELLENT source material and the active FANDOM for same! In other words, netflix promised us a good time but instead of giving the fans what we wanted, they knocked us on the head, stole some of valuable time and left us holding the bag trying to explain to others why we didn't like it.

I'm not the anon you're referring to, but I imagine it's how the plot significance of certain scenes get changed/dropped between adaptations. It's like why having Uncle Ben not die in a Spiderman film series fails to make a Spiderman plot work because it doesn't set up the "with great power comes great responsibility" theme.

In theory, it's possible to change the whole premise of a show while keeping the same thematic elements the same (e.g. Megalobox versus Ashita no Joe), but the whole thing about lazy adaptations is that they're lazy and sloppy. So they don't have the same thematic feel of the original. It'd be less bad I suppose if the movie was entirely unconnected to the original, but since it's a remake it's not, and it more obvious where the creative team missed the mark at understanding what made the original good.

Because it's supposed to be Death Note? I'm not understanding. Sure, in the scope of my life, it doesn't matter if this movie is bad. But if you have expectations that something could be good and it's terrible, the disappointment makes it worse than something that is simply terrible that you don't have any emotional attachment to.
