Are you by chance from the EU, anon? As far as I remember, old Playstation games and especially FFX and FFX-2 had the problem that when they were ported from NTSC display to PAL display, there was the necessity of having to compress the image. Which meant that characters looked "fatter". It was either that or a big, fat black bar on top and the bottom.

Nowadays with HDMI this problem does not exist anymore, but back in the day? it did. I remember seeing FFX pics of the Japanese and EU Version next to each other and wept a bit.
