I feel the same way about Orville/Discovery wank. More space opera is good space opera. More Holmes-derived fiction is good Holmes-derived fiction.

I agree in principle and I agree that comparing the shows is a bad way to frame an argument.

At the same time, that's not going to make me think that Sherlock is a good show, at all. (And I suspect that Discovery and Orville might not be good either but I haven't watched enough of them to say)

I didn't like Sherlock either, but I don't see much of a point in comparing Sherlock to Elementary.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
IA, their goodness or badness is not related to each other

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like Discovery and not Orville, but that's on the shows themselves, not because it's a competition!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
The Elementary/Sherlock comparisons at least make sense because they are pretty similar shows, IMO. Orville and Discovery are so different in tone and style. I love them both but I see no point in comparing them.

Is there anything still coming out about Sherlock to care about.

OP

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea, I've only just started out.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You do you, OP! The bashing between the various Holmsian fandoms is exhausting but there are a lot of people like you out there. Reach out to the other fans of both and carve your own little corner of fandom where you can all squee together.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound like my kind of person, OP.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
They're such different shows, and the portrayals of Holmes and Watson are so different, it's not necessary to choose a favorite when it's possible to like (or dislike) them both for completely different reasons.

I agree, but in what universe is Elementary the superior show that you're expected to love more than Sherlock? Elementary is not exactly the most popular kid at school.

The landscape changed A LOT after the last season of BBC's Sherlock came out. A lot of folks were really disappointed, and some that weren't getting in on the "secret GOOD fifth season" conspiracy hopped ship to Elementary and/or started saying that they had always thought Elementary was better. Some Elementary fans did the "SEE I TOLD YOU OUR SHOW WAS BETTER," which is equally obnoxious. But overall fans have been slapfighting about this online since the casting announcement for Joan Watson first came out.

It's not that Elementary is great, it's that Sherlock isn't

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
While I think Elementary is the superior show, I agree with you that it isn't something I have seen online. Usually Elementary is ignored, while Sherlock gets the lion's share of the attention (both good and bad).

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Same here. I like Elementary and think it's a better written show than Sherlock, but I don't see the kind of rabid fanbase for it that I do for Sherlock. I myself stay out of fandom debates, they're tiresome.

OP

My flist is very vocal about their hatred of Sherlock. They also praise Elementary very loudly.

Miss Sherlock is pretty good so far too.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
yoooooo how have I not heard about this before

only 4 of 8 episodes have aired so far, now's the time to check it out!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-23 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it was more that BBC Sherlock fans were really, really nasty about Elementary before it even started, and continued to be so. I enjoyed Elementary but the vitriol put me off watching any more of Sherlock.

But what about the Richie movies?
