I'm so glad this is an AO3 secret. I usually see this complaint in reference to FFN, when it's a thing that isn't specific to any one platform.

Most days I skip over these kinds of fics, but a lot of time, I'll leave a beta comment to point out where their story strengths are while giving formatting tips or correcting basic spelling/grammar. A lot of these authors are really young (especially to me lol) and still developing their writing style, so I think it's important for us fandom olds to be the kinds of people we wish we had encountered when we first started posting stuff. It has also been my experience that a lot of these new authors aren't necessarily native English speakers, which makes them more self-conscious and more prone to apologizing or downplaying their fics (which blows my mind, as a monolingual American)
