horror has a lot of nuances, is the thing - gore, psychological, surreal, manipulative, real-life-parallel - and it can be hard as hell to get right, even for professionals in cinema or literature. it's easier to leave a dearth than it is to risk writing the literary equivalent of a jump-scare-fest or of gore for gore's sake, sad to say.
