I haven't looked up sales figures, but I would definitely consider The Avengers to have been one of the central pillars of Marvel as a comic company?

According to this, only four Marvel titles have sold over 100 million copies:
Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, and Avengers.

Over the long term yes, but they weren't big in the "comics boom" of the early 90s which the poster is probably thinking of, and they definitely didn't have the name recognition of Spider-Man or the X-Men.
