More reading comprehension fail. Where does OP say that people should stop being in fandom when they get to a certain age? OP just doesn't want to be their MIL's captive audience for fannish enthusiasm. How is that unreasonable?

It bugs me when people misread a secret and then jump all over the secret maker because they've misread the secret. I try to speak up when that happens.

I don't think most of the people are misreading the secret. The OP comes across as someone who dislikes their MIL strongly, and that came through in the secret. We're all reacting to the vindictiveness that is threaded through the OP's words.

it's the "young enough to be her son" accusation. paraphrasing, I don't have the image in front of me.

like, yeah, we all know socially awkward oversharing idiots who need to shut up about FFIV already, and I think a lot more people would have generally sympathized with OP if they didn't throw in that age-related detail. or the vitriol over being a pathetic POS. both of those.
