Goodbye Antiperspirant

Has anyone here ever tried going on with out antiperspirant or deodorant?

How was it?

From what I understand (and partially attempted) you're fine for a few days, then suddenly your body begins to eject a number of foul smells, so you're quite ripe for few weeks, and then, amazingly, the pot of you simmers down, and your natural funk is no longer as potent. That is, you don't stink for a week, then you stink really bad for a few weeks, then you don't stink (or at least not as potently) from thereon after, to the end of your mortal life.

Any experiences? Recommendations?

I use a deodorant that's not an antiperspirant. And... it's fine. Your body mostly adjusts to it - I'm sure that varies from person to person, and maybe if you're particularly sweaty or have a notable odor you need antiperspirant. But I've never had an issue personally using what I use. I can't speak to the transition, though.

I use a deoderant that’s not an antiperspirant and occasionally I get kind of stinky, like after an all day hike in hot weather, but otherwise it’s not really noticeable. I don’t know about the “not stinking after a few weeks” thing, though. Have there been studies or anything?

So if you never use deodorant, you won't stink? There was no stinky armpits before deodorant companies came along? That seems to strain credulity to me. I'd like to see some actual scientific studies on our natural lack of stinkiness.

I quit using deodorant/antiperspirant a few years ago because I was tired of the rashes. It's like you heard. You get really stinky for a few weeks (which you can ride out by just keeping your arms down), then it goes away. You'll have armpit smell, but it'll be really mild. As long as you wash your pits regularly, it won't be an issue.

Recommendations: Keep your arms down for a few weeks and practice good hygiene. I work from home and don't have a lot of human contact, so I can't give specific advice for those things, but when I did go out during the first few weeks, no one said anything.

I don't use anti-perspirant very often. More in the summer, but I can and do go for weeks without using it. The smell isn't bad and I haven't noticed it being bad. The sweat that smells bad to me is the under breast sweat I get that soaks into my sports bra when I'm exercising and part of that has got to be the fabric holding that smell.

I do go without on the weekends when I'm home alone, and I get really stinky very fast just by sitting in front of the computer. Ripe after half a day, almost unbearable after a full day.

I would never try it at work, especially as my work is physically demanding. I often stink in the evening even with my daily shower + deodorant in the morning.

I don't wear deoderant because I don't stink. And I'm not just immune to my own stench - my boyfriend often comments on his jealousy that I can work out, not wash immediately afterwards and still not smell bad.

I don't really have advice except that you may as well give it a go - who knows, maybe you never stunk in the first place?

I don't wear it 95% of the time. It initially came from laziness, and being a stingy fuck that didn't want to pay for it. I'll ABSOLUTELY wear it if I'm doing any physical activity/going to a con, though. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it, I know that's when I'll stink, and I'm not about to subject anyone to it.

But the rest of the time? No one's ever said anything to me and I suspect it's a mix of hygiene/never going outside.

As long as you practice good hygiene and don't get particularly sweaty you shouldn't ever need a deodorant. Bad smells come from bacteria feeding on your sweat. If you clean away the sweat regularly there's nothing for the bacteria to feed on and no bad smells.

I'm quite sensitive to artificial chemical smells so I gave up on deodorants at least 15 years ago. That doesn't mean I don't stink from time to time but that's what showers are for.
