Obvious troll is obvious, that would be how.

I mean, like you said - I've never seen a staff of writers pull off such a diverse set of female characters, all with different strengths and weaknesses, motivations and ideologies, unrelated to any interest in a romantic partner. It's *gasp* almost as if they wrote them as real people ;3.

(That said, I've heard the cry of dismay over Naoto's gender from many a fangirl who wanted another kawaii anime boy to gush over. *facepalm* Personally, I was thrilled.)

Re: 178

[identity profile] atoli.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeez, I'd hope so. I hate it when people have that "I hate all female characters ever!!1" attitude.

The SMT casts in general are unique and different, although you gotta give them props for that. That's half the reason I love the franchise so much-- wonderful stories aside, each character on their own contributes in their own way. I couldn't hate any of them.

Hoho, as was I. I can't judge the character yet but I really hope it's one I'll love, because I'm liking of what I know already.

ITT: we spam all icons we have of SMT female characters.

Re: 178

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have nearly as many as I used to and all my Kaya icons are at the dressingroom, but I'll do what I can!

It's the same with me. There are characters I don't personally like, but I would never argue that they don't add to the story (e.g., Ken is my least favourite P3 character but Shinji and Aki, two of my favourites, would be nothing without him and his story). The girls of P3 couldn't be more different, neither could the ladies of DS:RK, and Yuko and Chiaki might as well be from different planets. (If one was to be morally outraged by an Atlus female, wouldn't it be Chiaki?)

My first thought: hell yeah that looks like one kick ass girl and I can't wait to see more of her. My second: brace for the misogynist moaning of many a cockblocked yaoi fan.

Re: 178

[identity profile] atoli.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, I probably have enough to spam for the both of us!

I could say the same for Aigis, myself. Well, I like her character, but she felt way too out of place in the story for me... But that's a whole new can of worms right there. Anyway, I find it funny how anyone in this comm (or any other one from what I've seen) only ever bithces about P3 and now P4 characters. I've never heard any complaints about Maya or Lisa or anyone else from Persona 1 or 2. Probably says something about the fandom right there!

Admittedly, I fall for detective characters. I was really excited to hear P4 revolved around murder mysteries and had a lead detective character. But I'm also weak for reserve traps too, so I was totally sold the moment I found that out. Unfortunately... yup. Angry cockblocked yaoi fans are gonna be everywhere, le sigh.

Re: 178

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I could say the same about Aigis, really. Her story was entirely tangential, not much is done with it until the very end, and then not in a very realistic way. It annoys me a little when she's considered "one of the girls" to boot. She's a machine, guys. In a human form to pass as human in public. But yeah, the lack of Maya and Lisa, but even more telling - the lack of Yuko and Chiaki, and even Argilla and Sera and Angel, even Kaya and Tae. Which means... by SMT, they mean P3.

The SMT "series" indeed. That term, it does not mean what they think it means.

I too have a weakness for reverse traps (and in my head the P4 protagonist is one too, so... sexy times?)

Re: 178

[identity profile] atoli.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Haaa, yup, that's my beef right there! Just... urf. I dislike how she was handled. Don't even get me started on Episode Aigis... /sigh

Ffft, nope. Oh well, less character bashing to worry about!

HAHA. It's on.

Re: 178

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
The idea of a machine with AI as a living being is a fascinating one, but P3 didn't go into it at all. Instead, Aigis didn't really seem like a robot from the beginning, and just add the power of friendship and poof! Instant human with tears and bawww. Hah hah everyone else seems to love FES and The Answer, I'm glad I'm not the only who thought it was unnecessary and lame. This really is the one time the Atlus staff has utterly let me down. ([livejournal.com profile] choffman hates FES/The Aigis Subplot even more than I do, to the point she made her own post-P3 rp, but sadly it's private and flocked because she has shame and I don't ;3 - I keep harrassing her to play those versions of the characters on the dressing room).

Which we really don't need, because I'm already fed up to the eyeballs with the Yukari bashing. She was a very realistic character with plenty of endearing qualities, and those qualities she's bashed for are present in male members of the cast, and ugh.

Oh I'm dead serious. One thing I dislike about the SMT series' latest installments is that the protagonists are a great big sausage fest. Where's my Maya, or my choice of female lead a la SMTIf...? I decided that was enough: the P4 dude? A lady.

Re: 178

[identity profile] atoli.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Aigis had the potential to be a really great character, but she was tossed in the completely wrong story for it, and then it wasn't even expanded on all that great. It's disappointing, because almost everything else was well done.
Aww, really? I'd love to be able to see it, or at least the versions she's come up with!

Haaah, yeahhhh. I've... pretty much accepted now the majority of the fandom will never like her. It's unfortunate, because I'd rather see the opposite, but, eh, what'cha gonna do, y'know? Fandom has some pretty silly logic sometimes.

Mmmm, yeah :[;; It doesn't bother me too much, although it would be pretty neat if we could have another female protag. And one more suited for it, hahaha. Maya was rad but, man, worst choice for a silent MC ever or what? XD BUT HEY, thinking that way is never a bad thing! ;D
harukami: (haha oops!)

Re: 178

[personal profile] harukami 2008-07-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
EXCELLENT.

-- seriously though, just. What. Atlus's female characters are amazing, as is their handling of gender identity and sexuality. I can't even take the secret-maker seriously ;;

Re: 178

[identity profile] atoli.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not either. They're some of the best games I've ever played, I am so ashamed of myself for never getting into the series sooner, and anyone who makes sweeping generalizations like that are clearly crazy. You can dislike a character or two, but all of them?! Gimme a break, man.
harukami: (the one you invoke)

Re: 178

[personal profile] harukami 2008-07-27 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
And I know some of my favourites are some of the most-bashed, but hell, they're ... ALL amazing just in different ways. Even if they're not to one's PREFERENCES, doesn't mean they're not incredibly well handled.

And I hear you on the "wish I got into it sooner" thing, honestly. There's a lot of games I can't get my hands on now which I really wanna play.

Re: 178

[identity profile] atoli.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some of mine, too u_u But, I try not to care, because I like them and they make the game enjoyable for me, so that's what matters in the end.

... Well... There are slightly not quite legal ways to get the older games >__> That probably makes me a bad person but... Honestly, how else are you supposed to get them ;_; I'D BUY THEM IF THEY EXISTED, REALLY.
harukami: (it's a penis)

Re: 178

[personal profile] harukami 2008-07-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing from your username that you and I probably have somewhat similar character tastes. Yeah, agreed. Bashing always gets my back up but, hey, *I* can still like them.

...Hah, good point. I mean, any of the SNES stuff I'd need a different console to play anyway. I should... probably look into the ROM side of things. ;;

Seconding everything said here. MegaTen female characters are AWESOME, capable and independent from a male interest/partner to grow and kick ass. It's one of the reasons I love the franchise so much!

And I was literally bouncing in my seat when I knew Naoto was a crossdressing girl, dammit. Long live Atlus. I really want the game to come out to find out more about her story.

Re: 178

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
QUESTION: I have heard that a lot of grife is coming from the fact that the dude who is apparently gay or questioning his sexuality apparently likes Naoto, and people are saying that Naoto turning out to be a girl is a huge copout by the writers. You seem to be a pretty knowledgeabl fan about these things, so can you confirm or deny this statement?

And on another note: man what happened to the days when I knew nothing of a games plottwists until I actually went and BOUGHT the damn game? It's like you can't avoid spoilers if you're a part of the internet these days.

Re: 178

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The game is still only out in Japan, and I'm waiting until I travel there to get my copy, so I can neither confirm nor deny this. I've heard the same rumor myself; we'll have to wait and see. I can say one thing, however: the Atlus staff almost never cop out. I have a feeling that, if he really does have a crush on Naoto, it's used in such a way that it helps him come to terms with his sexuality and when it's revealed that she's indeed a girl they don't end up together.

I rented MGS4 before I bought a PS3 for exactly the same reason.

Re: 178

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I suppose I should have faith in them to be smarter than that. After all, it's always good to have faith that SOME bigname RPG-manufacturers still have the knowhow to write stories that make sense. SquareEnix I love you guys I always have and I always will but stuff like Kingdom Hearts 2 and Final Fantasy 8 hurts me where my trust is.

I only wish I had the monetary resources to do the same. Living in Europe means we not only get the shittiest of PS3 choices (I refuse to buy one until I can find a 60 GB with backwards compability), we also get all the good games last. Even if MGS4 have been good to us in that aspect, it feels like a pebble in the ocean sometimes.

Hey chao hey chao delete your post again I love it when you do that

[identity profile] nobunaga-drill.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
His actual issue seems to be more about sexual confusion and fear over what people would think of him if he was gay, rather than actually being gay and his shadow boss basically takes this and exaggerates it x100.

Could be a copout for all I know, but I think it has more to do with people just getting their hopes too high. The original "confirmation" was just a second long flash of Huge Gay Stereotype Monster in a boss montage, and there wasn't anything actually saying he was gay.

IT IS OKAY I am superslow in replying anyways.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Aaah, that would make things a bit more clear. Still, it's probably going to be pretty awesome nonetheless. also since I know you are a fan of it unless I am mistaken: Gash Bell volume 20 translated! Have you read it yet?

Re: IT IS OKAY I am superslow in replying anyways.

[identity profile] nobunaga-drill.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet, though I'm planning to soon. Some of the major stuff in the arc kicks off in a couple volumes, so once it gets there I'm gonna read through the manga from the start and keep following from there.

Re: IT IS OKAY I am superslow in replying anyways.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I am way too weak to do anything like that. I've already downloaded it and will read it first thing in the morning. Just tell me, since you seem to know: will there be any moment as awesome as Umagon's BAMF-entrance during the Millenium Demon arc, and when is it happening in that case?

Re: IT IS OKAY I am superslow in replying anyways.

[identity profile] nobunaga-drill.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
IS THERE EVER

Volume 20 goes up to the early 200s I think so it'd be like...

22 and 23 IIRC.

Re: IT IS OKAY I am superslow in replying anyways.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-07-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I shall be waiting with great anticipation then, oh yes I shall.
