108. He really got me in the finale. At first I thought he was just being a whiny kid and kept wishing some sort stand-in for Krishna would show up to straighten him out a la the Bahagavad Gita, but he showed me, just like he showed his friends and his past lives. In the end, his choice not to kill Ozai wasn't wimpy, and it wasn't a cop-out; it was active, it was decisive, and it was what the world needed. Pacifism can be all that — and that's something we need to see more of in the media, if even self-described pacifists like myself are prone to forget it. I should have realized I could expect as much from the writers who just two episodes ago had played Katara's revenge quest so terrifyingly straight.

All this is to say, you shouldn't be ashamed of feeling inspired by him.

As for your spiritual quest, good luck with that. And namaste.

136. Sorry, but you sort of fail at being a Shakespeare fan.

163. Lots of "Disney made me think bad thoughts" secrets this week. Apparently, it's not that uncommon.

And yes, everyone, the Joker looks bizarrely attractive in drag. It's okay to admit that.

Indeed. Though in their defense: At one point, Aang says that all his past lives are telling him he has to kill the Fire Lord... but none of them actually say that. Perhaps in context it seems that way, but really, most of their advice is actually pretty good.

Yeah. In fact, by dropping out of the Avatar State--which he had little control over at the time--he was being MORE active and decisive than if he'd just let things take their course.

I should have realized I could expect as much from the writers who just two episodes ago had played Katara's revenge quest so terrifyingly straight.

And yet, in the end, she opts for mercy as well (though you could argue that being stuck with his horrible mother isn't very merciful).

All this is to say, you shouldn't be ashamed of feeling inspired by him.

IAWTC!

True. I'd caught that too, at one point, but then I guess I forgot.

Exactly. She opts for mercy, and it isn't soppy, it isn't childish, it isn't naive. The man who killed her mother doesn't turn out to be some woobie. After meeting him, she's more convinced than ever that he's a miserable excuse for a human being who probably deserves to die — and killing him still isn't the right course for her to take.

I love Avatar so much, and I'm so happy that it's a children's show, and that children are watching it and hopefully taking away from it something that will counteract some of the more toxic media out there. In addition to this portrayal of nonviolence as something adult and active and difficult — and ultimately worth all the difficulty — I'm consistently floored by the complete lack of gender stereotyping. Men and women and boys and girls all play a wide variety of roles, and it's just completely natural and fluid. And on the rare occasion someone does try to obstruct that ("Kyoshi Island", "The Waterbending Master"), it's portrayed as unnatural and foolish, if not outright demented.

Agreed. Agreed so hard. I love Avatar because of that. <3 And you win the internet.
