101, people like you are the reason why it pisses me off when people honestly agree with ideals such as those expressed in 176. I'm not in such a dire situation like you, but I'm unemployed, no fucking company will hire me despite the fact that I have a college degree by a decent college in a field that's comparatively "hot", and I never had money to support my hobbies legally. If not for free software, I wouldn't even be able to use a computer legally. And don't even get me started on the merchandise all my friends buy the whole time.

I am going to fucking laugh if "supporting" your hobbies gets you arrested. God, you greedy little thugs make me sick. The creators of your favorites series would kick you ass if they could see you right now.

Something about calling someone who's evidently trying quite hard to get a job and has no money not for lack of trying a "greedy little thug" just seems wrong.

Maybe that's just me!

lol, i said this in another comment, and i'll say it again:

Oh, there's a lot of grey area here. Sure, there are arseholes who refuse to pay for any dvds because they can get it free on the internet. And I agree, if you have the resources, you should definitely buy the dvds and the merch to support the people who've provived you with such great entertainment.

But there are also people who can't afford to buy all the dvds at once, but buy what they can to support the industry and download the rest. And those fans then go on to tell their friends about this great show, who then go on to buy some or all the dvds and tell other friends. It's this word of mouth that is actually needed by a lot of shows favoured by fandom, because they're often not advertised or reviewed well.

there are countless examples of actors or writers encouraging fans to go out and promote their shows and tell their friends about it, supernatural being a good recent example. and in the anime fandom, it would be naive to assume shows get picked up to be sold to a western market purely through interest spread by legitimate dvd/manga purchases from japan, rather than rapidly spreading easy-to-obtain fansubs/scanlations. good word of mouth is the difference between an unarguable flop and a cult-hit.

So, if you're so concerned with the industry, would you rather one person buys 1 dvd or piece of merch, downloads the rest, and tells their friends about their favourite new show, or would you prefer one person remained completely ignorant of the show, therefore putting no money back into the industry? Considering the way the internet is changing the industry anyway (watching episodes for free on network sites, downloading from itunes, and the possibilities the success of whedon's dr horrible represents), your black and white view of internet piracy morality is not only old-fashioned, but probably more harmful than helpful to the people you claim to support.

You know what? I can totally relate to 101. I've been in a similar situation before, and it sure as hell isn't fun to budget yourself based on necessities rather than wants. But that doesn't make it okay for you to download the things that you want illegally, because it's still illegal, no matter how poor you are. If you go into a movie store and steal a DVD, that's illegal, isn't it? Why don't you complain to the stores for not giving you what you want because you don't have the money to get it yourself?

tldr; you aren't entitled to entertainment. It isn't a basic necessity or right like food and shelter.

Because obviously poor people don't deserve to be entertained. I'm not trying to encourage illegal activities for those who can afford not to, but for god's sake, these kinds of admonishments just reek of self-righteousness and privilege.

... There's a difference between being in "a situation" like that and growing up in it. Where there is NO WAY to get out of it, you're too young to have a job, and you can't ask your parents because they don't have spare money for you.

I think this fucking country has it priorities skewed when you can get comparable punishment for killing someone as you can downloading a fucking album.
