I'm a BTS fan and I agree, I don't know why they're so much more popular than other groups. I like them, but they don't necessarily deserve so much hype (especially their newer music, it's kind of meh compared to their older sound). Also yes, Army's are fucking batshit. But it's a large fandom with lots of younger fans, what you gonna do

I'm always a bit confused about groups that have so many members... especially if it's vocal-only groups. More than 5 is really stretching it.

It's to have more tropes (and/or looks) that fans can attach themselves to.

Even as a K-pop fan, I agree completely, lmao. It's hard for me not to roll my eyes at any group with more than.. seven members, generally? It's impossible to divide up the lyrics to any song properly, and it's just too transparent that the company's trying way too hard to appeal to as many people as they possibly can all at once.

having been a kpop fan since back when the Wonder Girls were just mounting their 'so hot' comeback I can get the frustration as to why BTS of everyone have been the one to successfully crossover but I'd argue that I'd much rather have ARMYs to deal with then Cassies, you know?

I think while BTS put in work they just got lucky to be 'the one' instead of say EXO or SHINee or someone older, though I'm sure the vast social media correspondence helps too.

I like their music and have followed since the beginning but I'm not sure if I'd like them if I could only experience them via the fandom (I'm too old for all that LOL)

Their fans ARE batshit.

That said, I like their music, I like their personalities, I like that they WRITE their own music and they they deal with things like societal expectations, depression, etc through their lyrics rather than "OH HI SHINY SPARKLY POP!"

I peripherally like other groups (GOT7 who are stinking adorable), but I just don't like as many of their songs as I do with BTS.

My younger sister's an ARMY, but I agree that most of them are insane.

KPOP in general is pretty insane. However, most don't top the crazy meter for me like the YunJae fans do. Now those are some bats hit fans. *shudders*

what gets me about the BTS army is the insistence that this is a magical sparkly unicorn group in the industry, like they're somehow ~~more real~~ than other idol groups. Given how micromanaged and PR-oriented the entire Korean idol industry is, I'm reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaal skeptical about "oh but they write their own songs and get to be themselves!" like, sure_jan.gif
