People do that? Why?

Why do people tag fics as anything?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
sure, but "two women talk about not a man, minimum once" is such a bizarrely specific tag i can't fathom who it is for, especially since it can be as brief and inconsequential as a fart.

I guess it's for the people who'd care about that kind of thing. People tag for lots of odd things I wouldn't expect, so this just seems like one more thing.

Yeah, but since when does being brief and inconsequential stop people from tagging stuff? People do this all the time - tag for A/B pairing when the fic is about C/D but A/B make a brief appearance. I mean just LOOK at all the weird tags on AO3 and tumblr people use for every little thing under the sun.

They shouldn't do that, either.

But also, that's arguably worse, because tagging for 1 paragraph of A/B in a 200k C/D fic actively makes it harder for A/B fans to find A/B fic. Whereas most people aren't browsing the Bechdel test pass/fail tags, so it's mostly just useless in that it tells you next to nothing about the content of the fic.

So that people who want to read pics that pass the Bechdel Test can find it, I assume.
