Would it destroy the plot to have him be an American guy who just happens to be working and living in England? That seems like the best compromise to me.

This is what they did with Sandra Oh's character in Killing Eve (grew up in the US then moved back to the UK as an adult) which took 2 seconds to tell and then doesn't have to get dumb. Though she's actually Canadian, so she probably can do a British accent!

Wait, what? Is there a stereotype out there that Canadians are better at British accents than Americans?

Because I'm Canadian and any attempt I make at faking any kind of British accent never goes well.
