Though I do think they should get someone that can do the accent right, there have been a lot of non-American actors playing American characters. I mean, even iconic American figures - Lincoln, Nixon, Spider-Man, Superman (okay, he's Kryptonian, but he was raised American, though I could get behind a Canadian actor). And for TV shows, there's 9-1-1 (Oliver Stark), The Gifted (Stephen Moyer and Sean Teale), Hawaii Five-0 (Alex McLoughlin), Fargo (Martin Freeman), House (Hugh Laurie), half the cast of True Blood, and some of those accents have been very questionable at times.
